Okay, I have been having Shwieregkeiten with this. There are a few meanings of "awkward" in English, and I want
help with the third one:

1. You mother embarrasses you in public: "Das war peinlich!"
2. You are having difficulty carrying lots of boxes: "Das war schwerfällig!"
3. In this example, you are in an elevator and you ex-girlfriend walks in. This makes you nervous and you say
''Well... this is awkward...."

Would (could?) I use "peinlich" here again? Also, do numbers one and two sound correct also? :D

Thanks in advance,
A young Irish boy who wants to become fluent in Deutsch.

Hi,

German is not my native language but in the third case I'd say 'unangenehm' - unpleasant-, peinlich would go also imo because it kind of hurts your soul, so to speak..
I don't want to be priggish but it's 'SCHwierIgkeiten' :-)

Good luck

While the situation in the elevator would definitely be unangenehm, saying 'well, this is awkward' is something you might actually say to your ex while you're in the elevator with them as an acknowledgement that the situation is schwierig. It's a sort of funny icebreaker for an unpleasant circumstance.

2. You are having difficulty carrying lots of boxes: "Das war schwerfällig!"

Only people, movements and machines are "schwerfällig." Better say: "Das war schwer".
