What method are you using to set it up? And in what OS? Afaik, Windows doesn't support
compose keys (if you're using it), and I don't remember if dead keys are difficult to
set up.

I think the easiest way to do it in Windows might be with combining characters. They
are technically separate characters, but when you put them after another character most
programs render them as if they were one (like, a character will look like 'ĉ', but if
you hit backspace the ˆ would remove, as it's a separate character). The combining
characters you would want to use are U+0302 (combining ˆ) and U+0306 (combining ˇ). In
the example 'ĉ', you
would hit the 'c' first, then whatever key you have designated to U+0302.

There are some disadvantages to doing it this way though. Some fonts render a character
with a combining character following slightly different than using the actual
precomposed Unicode character (Papyrus looks weird iirc). There can also be problems
with pattern matching. Since there's already a precomposed Unicode character for ĉ
(U+0109), some programs won't recognize it as the same as c (U+0063) followed by the
combining character (U+0302).

I just hadn't assigned any keys yet as I am unfamiliar with the program. Thank you for
your help everyone.

Go buy a Mac. Set your keyboard to US Extended. Use the option key and be amazed at how intuitive it is. ;)
