While doing the first lessons of Assimil, I stumbled on this sentence:
Yo cognozco ''a'' un medico muy simpatico.
What does that ''a'' means and what's the rule about it? Around what verbs and when should I put it?

In Spanish, when the direct object is a person, it is preceded by the preposition "a." It doesn't really involve the verb at all, just the object that is receiving the action from it. I have also seen people use "a" before pets...
Un ejemplo: Tengo que dar de comer a mi gatito. [I have to feed my kitten.]
The "a personal" is something that is easy to identify when someone else uses it, but I always struggle to remember it myself! ¡Buena suerte!

Also in that sentence implied a "personal" relation with the doctor. If you say: Yo conozco un medico muy simpatico, you are saying that you know a doctor that is simpatico , but implied that you know many doctors. However, when you add the "a" your are saying that from all the doctors that you may know, this one in specific is the most "simpatico".
