I have a lot of music in my target language, Finnish in this case, and I'm wondering if I could use the lyrics for sentence mining. I know that the majority of lyrics are not written like everyday language, but would it hurt to use these sources in order to study new words or simply to understand the meaning? Or is sentence mining only aimed for mainstream sentences? I appreciate any thoughts.

You're supposed to sentence mine any content that you find interesting. I think if your aim is any degree of fluency -in other words, being able to talk about things beyond the weather and food- the more language the better! Don't let the people who say things like "that word/phrase isn't useful!" get you down. If it's a content you're reading, then you're (I assume!) interested in the topic, and so it's a word or sentence that will be useful for you.
Mining popular songs is quite useful, actually. Phrases and cliches from popular songs are constantly entering everyday speech, and it also gives you something to connect with the people of the language you're learning.
In short, yes, use lyrics and poetry ;)

I agree with the above post, but I'd make sure the lyrics and poetry aren't to....'artistic' I guess is the best way to put it, in a way that would be confusing or misleading. I wouldn't learn German from Rammstein or Japanese from Dir En Grey. I made the mistake of sentence mining from Finntroll while studying Swedish and got a lot of very conflicting info with some vocabulary and definitely with pronunciation until I bothered to research them and found out they sung in a specific dialect.

Yeah I understand that. I mean, Finntroll are from Finland, so they're speaking Finnish-Swedish, which makes things difficult for learning. Some of the bands are somewhat artistic I guess, in that it's heavily poetic in nature, but I'll still give it a try just to give myself a start with it.
