I have used the FSI Standard chinese course and while I think it is good in some regards, it moves at very sluggish pace and the first 6 modules only teach a bit over 1000 words. Moreover many of those words are unfortunately not very useful. Lots of vocabulary of military/governmental nature. On the other hand modules 7-9 move along very quickly and are more vocabulary intensive. These modules also contain more useful vocabulary. When using the course I liked since it gave you a lot of opportunities for speaking. However now have changed my thinking and believe that listening is a much more important skill. Thus I think that Assimil Chinese is a better course than modules 1-6 of standard chinese. Assimil chinese teaches a lot of words that are missing from Standard chinese.

Unfortunately, it appears that exactly these modules are lacking in the downloads.

I'm having trouble getting the files from Sir Nigel's post. When i click
on any of the megaupload.com links it takes me to a page where the
name of the file is stated at the bottom but I dont see a way to
download it to my computer. The other mirror site takes me to a site
in German, that seems ( i cant read German) that its just trying to get
me to sign with an account with them. Someone please help! (Oh, i
can access all the fsi-language-courses.com files fine, but
unfortunately it only has standard chinese mod. 1-2 (which i already
have) I'm trying to access the ones I'm missing (3, 4, 5, 6, and if
possible 7). If anyone can help, I'd be most grateful!

thanks again,

-snake

I noticed this freely available FSI course is some 25+ years old. I am wondering if it is worth bothering with at all, purely based on its age.

I expect the language will have changed quite a bit over this space of time, especially considering how much things have changed in China in general.

Any comments on it from this point of view would be much appreciated.

The FSI course that is currently being sold will be newer, I suppose. Can anyone tell us how recent it is, and approximately how much it has been changed compared to this free version.

Its the same course and while some of the vocabulary concepts are
outdated "jia ting gan bu" "or "Jie dao ban shi chu" might get you
some funny looks, the grammar- which the majority of the course
drills- has not changed, Overall, the course is actually quite
comprehensive. Do you need to supplement with it with other
materials? Of course- its a foreign language and one that has its
roots in a written language over 4000 years old, meaning they've
had some time to think of a word or saying for almost nearly
everything. No one course is perfect, but this one will certainly kick
your ass a bit!

For Rapidshare.de you scroll part of the way down the page and select "free". After you wait for the timer to hit zero, your link will then appear to start the download. For Megaupload you need to click the upper-right X to close the banner add (in addition to closing the pop-up ad) and then you should be able to "save as" the link to start the download.

Big thanks for putting this up !!!
(Which I should have said earlier too)

Based on the feedback I thought I'd better give this a go and have now started downloading.

I notice modules 5 and 6 are missing the audio files. And modules 7 and 8 are of course missing completely here, as was already said.

Considering these copies can apparently be legally distributed now, one would think that the missing parts too, could be found somewhere on the net.

Any other pointers or ideas on how to get our hands on those ?

And again - Big thanks Sir Nigel !!!

(I don't want it to sound like I am complaining by asking for more - this is absolutely great as it is - but having the complete collection would of course be even better.)

ok, i got module 5 downloaded to my computer and i got ahold of a
.rar extractor program that works with my mac os (10.2) and yet I
still cant open these! Is there anyway you can put these files up as
mp3/.pdf for direct download on a free ftp or http site? If you need
hosting space I can see if my school will give me room on their
server to host. Sharing these files and making them readily
accessible to everyone here will really help the community here.
Thanks again.
