In his interview on Russian TV he said he could speak 15 languages and read 40. He said he had studied most of his languages at school. At that time there were few resourses available in the USSR, so he just started with a grammar book. His son George is also a linguist and on the side he has an extensive music review site

I've been more interested in the late Mr. Starostin's work on long-range etymology with other linguists for some time now, but it's nice to see him speak about something other than etymology.
