Hello,

How do you practice speaking and writing? I'm asking this, because contrary to listening and reading where one has only to understand it, when speaking and writing one needs to get feedback to prevent possible mistakes to sink in into the memory. So it's mostly about how to get someone to correct your mistakes?

I'm already enrolled for a course and have also tried to speak to natives (but I'm a bit shy to just start talking). I also send e-mails from time to time in my target language.

Thanks in advance for your ideas.

There are sites like Ling-Q, where you can find a penpal for your TARGET language, or where you can find an e-buddy in your targer language.

If your taking a class, maybe you can put up a flyer to let others know you are looking for a Speaking/writing buddy.

Get to know your teacher, introduce yourself and flex those speaking muscles a little bit.

I'm in the same boat about approaching Native speakers. I joined my schools International Organization which has a BUNCH of Spanish speakers, I sometimes listen to them speak but I cant bring myself to speak more...
If you find a cure for that, let me know. I'm in my 3rd Semester in Spanish and now the pressure is on to speak, speak, speak....

For speaking, try a Skype language partner. For writing, there's a free essay exchange site - can someone remind
me of the name?

There is Lang-8 that is free unlike Ling-Q. Though it
doesn't have lessons either. But you write journals in your target language and natives
correct them. You can also help correct other users learning your language also. It has
helped me quite a bit but due to my lack of vocabulary I haven't gotten that much out of
it.

for me, lingq writing correction system (and same for the 'conversation reports') is
better than what you get from free websites (I tried them both and decided to use paying
systems at the end).

I guess there's no really way around it except finding natives willing to help you.

All right, thanks for the ideas. For the start I think I'm going to try Lang-8, but I want to try Skype later as well.

The best way for speaking is to just suck it up and get out there. I routinely make a fool out of myself, but it makes my spoken language skills considerably better every time I do it. Most people are willing to help you get out what you want.
