Well, newbies are sometimes overly enthused about particular name brand material. Just think of how many people have raved about using XYZ even though they've never used it themselves. I don't know anything about chinese, but I have noticed that the big name pods do have an awful lot of English blathering on them, even for their advanced lessons. I guess it's because the internet relies on people stumbling accross them who can't really speak the target languages, but need to be sucked in. I wouldn't mind so much if the blathering was about the language, or learning, but it's just such woodenly scripted banter. Even the "ums" and "ers" are scripted in. Of course, I am a miserable old bugger which doesn't help.

Chinesepod.com is by far the best resource for learning Mandarin. Don't waste your time on the other stuff. That last sentence does more than infer that all other products for learning Chinese are worthless...does it not?
