I am not sure if this has been posted before. Is it okay to first learn kanji with English meanings? Is this what most people do? Would this mess me up in any way?

Easily done. (Lots of things are going to mess you up so don't sweat that part, just get started.)
Keep in mind that you won't have 100% alignment between an English word and the kanji in question.
Search this form for Heisig's method and you should find lots of relevant posts.
Someone mentioned Smart.fm the other day in this forum and lots of people seem to use Anki. A lot of work has already been done to make your life easier so have a look. Good luck!
