Is that pronounced different from a regular и?
I don't know the name of the accent, it starts lower left and goes diagonally to upper right.
Or is it just for showing which syllable gets the accent or something?
For example, look at the name written in Russian on this page:

Those are just accent marks, showing where the stress falls in each word. Note that it's also over one letter in the rest of her name as well. Some Russian materials written for learners use this accent; others will put the stressed vowel in bold. As far as I know, in native materials, you'll never see stress marks like this.

If you are talking about "Й" you must know that it's called "и краткая" (short i), so it is separate letter in russian alphabet which is pronouced like y in boy.
