There are lots of myths being spread about language learning on the internet these days. It amazes me that many
of them are accepted as true without any question. These seem to be propagated mostly by the younger
generation who grew up on the internet. There is a desire for language learning to be free and easy; almost
magical. I sometimes wish there was a Snopes for language myths. But perhaps I’m wrong about all this.

Here are some examples of what I’m talking about. Feel free to comment/debate them, or add your own.

General

1)        Learning techniques that aren’t easy either won’t work, or aren’t worth the trouble to use.
2)        Learning must be fun. If it isn’t fun, you either won’t learn, or it’s not worth the effort.
3)        You have to love a language in order to be able to learn it.
4)        Motivation X is the only motivation that will allow you to learn a language.
5)        Text books are useless.
6)        Teachers are useless.
7)        The classroom is useless.
8)        Things that are not on the internet are cumbersome and therefore won’t work.
9)        Translating is never a good idea when learning a language.
10)        Learning a third language through a second is always the best way.
11)        All learning materials must be free, and piracy is always ethical.
12)        Spending most of one’s study time with flashcards is a good idea.
13)        Learners should avoid conversation for as long as possible.

Specific languages

1)        Heisig is the only way to learn kanji, and the only intelligent way to start learning Japanese
2)        Heisig don’t work
3)        Listening to pop music is a great way for a beginner to learn Thai.
4)        Ignoring tones in the beginning is ok in Mandarin
5)        The 10,000 sentence method is a great way for an English speaker to learn French

This forum

1)        The LR method is better than listening reading and translating.
2)        There is no need to research the advice people give you here.

15) You can learn a language not only with minimal effort, but with no effort whatsoever. That is, "subliminally" - while you're asleep.

I wish people would actually read what atamagaii wrote; it would cut down on a number of very silly ideas. Translating is part of L-R, just not part of 'step 3'.

18) Rosetta Stone.

(Naw, just kidding, I've heard it's actually been helpful for some people. I just couldn't resist.)

A lot of the things you wrote on your list sound just like AJATT. I'm guessing you're not a fan?
