Is the first -r in prendre silent? According to the older version of TY Catalan it is, along with derivitaves (aprendre, sorprendre) and tenses formed from the infinitive stem (prendré etc). However in the newer version, on the CDs it seems to be pronounced, although I'm not 100% sure. I checked the phonetic transciption in my Catalan dictionary, and that indicates it is pronounced. Has the pronunciation of this verb changed since the publication of the first version of TY?

The most recent Assimil says it's silent, but I have already noticed that this seems to vary by dialect.

I think it's silent in Standard Catalan as spoken in Barcelona.

Yes,in general, it is silent, aprendre= "ah-pen- drer", Sorprendre= "soor-pen-drer". Pronouncing the r would sound to me as If you pronounced every single T in every word you say in English: fasten, crescent, important,etc...

Congratulations on learning Catalan, should you need any further help, do not hesitate to contact me.
