Mon dernier cours de français s'est passé assez bien, ma prononciation et ma conversation s'améliorent au fur et à mesure et je cherche de moins en moins mes mots. La prof dit qu'on peut faire n'importe quoi pendant les leçons mais je ne suis pas sûr quoi faire pour profiter du temps dans la mesure du possible, à part conversation. Maintenant nous lisons et discutons des actualités et avons des conversations aux sujets.
Pimsleur Russian курс ещё медленный и скучный, но я не забуду словa. Ho parlato un po' in Italiano con la mia amica sul Facebook Chat. Dovevo cercare alcune parole nel dizionario per potere esprimermi. Vorrei che avessi adesso il tempo di studiare l'italiano. Sono troppo occupato ora, suono con il mio gruppo stasera e domenica sera, non so ancora quando ( o se ! ) andrò in Ucraina, trasloco presto, ha appena cominciato a fare Krav Maga ( autodifesa ), e mi tengo impegnato con il francese e il russo. Il tempo libero mi manca ! Maybe I'll just do every second Pimsleur Russian lesson, at least at this stage where I'm already familiar with most of the content. I await the spaced repetition purists chasing me with flaming pitchforks for breaking their perfectly crafted interval pattern, but I reckon it'll save me a bit of time and get me onto the newer and more interesting material more quickly, since my time is at a premium as those who read Italian will know :). When I did some of Pimsleur Italian last year I skipped a few lessons and it didn't seem to do any harm, except for not knowing a word that was introduced in a previous lesson the first time I came across it. Good luck in your trip with Russian. If you need any help with Russian or need a speaking practice ask me about. In your sentence Pimsleur Russian курс ещё ме́дленный, и ску́чный но я не забуду словa. what do mean? I understand that it'll be sound better in this way: "Pimsleur Russian курс медленный и скучный, но я не забуду (? смогу запомнить/смогу повторить) изученные словa." What do you think? For a start I put the comma in the wrong place, it was meant to be before но, not before и. I've edited my post to fix that. Anyway what I was trying to say was "the Pimsleur Russian course is still slow and boring, but I will not forget the words". I just phrased it using the very little grammar and vocabulary that I know, I don't doubt that there's much more elegant ways to express it.
I still don't really feel like I could have much of a conversation beyond "привет, как дела?" "хорошо", but once I've learned a bit more from Pimsleur etc. I'll definitely be interested in speaking practice. Спасибо. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Last week was even busier than usual for me, and filled with musical performance, socialising, seeing family, sorting out plans for moving, and physical activity (3 hour Krav Maga self defence session - great fun but painful and tiring!). So I got very little work done, especially in terms of Russian. But this week and the next are looking a lot quieter so I should be able to fit in a good bit of Russian.
I've started experimenting with bilingual texts - currently reading and enjoying La Chute by Albert Camus, from Bilingual-Texts.com. It seems quicker and less distracting than just reading French and looking up unknown words in a dictionary (or using LingQ), but on the other hand it's easy to let your brain take the path of least resistance and rely too much on the English. If I can find some for less literary works like policier novels that'll be amazing but I doubt that such things exist. I might look into Russian ones as well, although I'm not sure if they'll be as useful at a beginner level. To be honest, time spent listening or speaking would probably be more productive towards my goals, but there's times when I can't do these but I can read so may as well make the most of them. Along similar lines, I'm going to start writing a bit more again when speaking's not an option, because I love to write and it's a good way to use all the vocab and expressions I pick up when reading. Just my thoughts or stupid short stories or accounts of something that happened during my day. I've decided that each Monday I should make a few plans and goals for the week. Since some weeks are obviously busier than others, these will change a lot based on my other plans. So for this relatively quiet week: - 1 hour or more of Russian per day, including at least one Pimsleur lesson. - Investigate Russian bilingual texts. - One Using French lesson and one second wave French With Ease lesson per day. - One French TV episode per day (I'm currently watching dubbed South Park episodes). - Finish reading La Chute. - French lesson on Tuesday, Meetup on Wednesday. - Catch up on sleep!! 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Hier j'ai passé une journée très française. J'ai presque fini La Chute, il ne reste que 10 pages, et dans la soirée je suis allé au Yakety Yak et puis Meetup. Les événements ont pris une tournure intéressante : la rencontre de Meetup s'est mieux passé que celle de Yakety Yak. À cette dernière, la plupart de la conversation m'ennuyait et je n'avais pas grand chose à dire concernant les sujets, peut-être parce que j'étais de loin le plus jeune du groupe. Et même quand je parlais, j'avais du mal à trouver mes mots et à m'exprimer. Mais au Meetup, pour une fois, je parlais dès le départ et je me suis bien débrouillé. Au début, pour la plupart il s'agissait des banalités : le travail, la ville, les intérêts, mais ça ne me dérangeait pas du tout, j'étais tout à fait heureux d'avoir une telle occasion de parler ! Quelle différence auprès du Meetup précédent il y a deux semaines où je pouvais à peine placer un mot. Dans l'ensemble, ces rencontres sont une question de chance ; je dois continuer d'y aller, faire la connaissance des habitués, et accepter le fait que toutes les rencontres ne se passeront pas bien mais tant mieux quand elles le font !
Tra i due incontri, ho trovato il tempo di cenare e fare dei russo : ho letto delle pagine sul russianlessons.net e fatto una lezione di Pimsleur. Sì, lo so, scrivo adesso in Italiano di russo, ma non conosco abbastanza russo per potere scriverne in russo. Но сегодня вечером бодет русский вечер. Pimsleur Russian is getting tougher. The speakers make no concessions in terms of speed (which I suppose a good thing really) and there's a few words that just won't stick, but such is the point of its repetition. I do find that even if I'm struggling, by the time I've slept and moved onto the next lesson I remember a lot more easily. Good old subconscious mind. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Successful week I'd say! For once I don't have a lot planned for the weekend, so I've got a lot of language study and music practice done today and should get plenty more done tomorrow.
I had a Skype session and my conversation partner recommended some French TV series for me: Braquo (police drama), Commune, Mafiosa, which I'll look into. It's been a month or so since we last spoke, and he could tell right away that I had improved since last time. I've also watched some Simpsons episodes, following the transcript, and I found a copy of Vol de Nuit by Saint-Expuéry in the local charity shop, which seems to be a special edition for learners: it has explanations of the more difficult vocabulary and expressions. I also attempted to make a Harry Potter bilingual text, but gave up after almost two hours of pissing about with Vim and LaTeX with no decent results. I think I've figured out how to do it at least; the process just isn't quite as automate-able as I had hoped. The paragraphs have to be lined up, which requires putting them in the order or French paragraph then English then French then English etc.. It might be less hassle to just open both documents side by side. I'm starting to have doubts about Russian: I'm wondering if this business trip to Ukraine is ever actually going to materialise; even if so, whether knowing any Russian beyond the basic greetings will actually be useful since I'd be accompanied by a Russian speaker most of the time; in any case I don't see myself being in a Russian speaking country any time soon apart from this possible trip; and in all the time I'm spending slogging away at Russian I could be making good progress in Italian. But on the other hand I still find Russian fascinating and I want to finish what I've started. Ah, decisions. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Today I put some Pimsleur Russian lessons (with gaps removed) onto my MP3 player to listen to on the bus for revision. Then a few people came onto the bus and started speaking French, so I just had to listen to them instead. On the bus journey back, I again tried to listen to my Pimsleur Russian but then the girl in front of me started speaking on the phone in Russian so of course I had to listen to her. It's a hard life :)
