Starting a new log for 2011

my previous log can be found here.

TAC Languages will be:

-- German --> move to a good C1/C2
-- Portuguese --> become an active speaker
-- French --> actively improve writing and reading
-- Ladakhi --> from 0 move to B1

other languages will be stumbled upon and played with, I promise!

(can someone please add Ladakhi as a language in the profile and tags? It is not Tibetan according to my sources.)

So, the other current team are troglodyte, LanguageSponge, tomsawyer, Jinx!

I can follow-up on their logs here, in the TAC General info thread.

Quick update - I'm in Paris for the end of year week and obviously 100% immersed in French.

However, I think I need to post my objectives, sources and methods for the year. This post will serve for that! I'll also be posting info on my blog.

FRENCH
- GOAL: Active writing and reading. Grammar and writing strengthening.
- I WANT: Writing - capable of expressing myself with ease and without faults in an eMail or letter or forum post.
- MATERIAL: Grammaire Progressive du Français
- TASKS: Read a grammar lesson a week and write an email or short letter or posts.

GERMAN
- GOAL: Move my German to a C1 level this year. Toying with taking the certification tests.
I WANT:
- Reading - comfortable reading novels, e-mail and newspapers with a level that I only need to look up 2 to 3 words per page.
- Writing - capable of expressing myself clearly and without faults in an eMail or letter or forum post.
- Listening and comprehesion - understand most films, radio and conversation in a group.
- Speaking - clearly understood in everyday interactions, capable to give a presentation in German, hold a meeting, give directions.
- MATERIAL: Everyday passive input. ASSIMIL Perfectionnement Allemand. F2F classes every week (1.5 hrs) and various podcasts and books. I'll mention them as I use them. Mnemosyne program for cards.
- TASKS: Class once a week, cards, learning vocab several times each week. At least write an email or short letter or posts per week.

LADAKHI
- GOAL: To learn all of the GSiL sections by the end of the year. This means not only the vocab and phrases but also reading off of flash cards and basic grammar here presented.
- MATERIAL: "Getting Started in Ladakhi", Flash cards and the usual word memorization techniques. I probably need to find oral material as I have none here and youtube is rather poor in this area.
- METHOD: Passive/Active reading, Word and phrase memorization, Flashcards, On-site trip in late January
- TASKS: Daily work, at least 10-20 minutes.

PORTUGUESE
- OBJ: go from the beginnings last year to B1/B2 or further. Start slow on this and activate Q2.
- MATERIAL: ASSIMIL & Pimsleur. Pons Mini Sprachkurs Portugiesisch.
- TASKS: 1 or 2 lessons a week.

SPANISH
- OBJ: maintenance, continue to build vocabulary, keep oral fluidity, written fluidity.
- TASKS: Read one or two books a year, write a letter or email a week or speak once a week at least for 30 min. Read a news story a week.

Until I advance in these areas for at least two months, I have actively chosen to put Italian, Chinese, etc... on hold.

Hey teammate! I'm so jealous of you, getting to kick off your TAC with a week of French immersion! I should be so lucky... :) I'm also really impressed that you're tackling Ladakhi, a language I have to admit I had never heard enough before now. I take it it's spoken in Tibet? How did you find resources for it?

Bonne chance cette année!

Hi all,

Jinx: I have a total immersion team at home - French is our principle "house" language with my daughters but yes, it is very nice to be in Paris for a week! Ladakhi is a language I got interested in because I have a trek planned in a few weeks (see my blog at www.zyntx.com/wordpressblog). Language sources are tough to find! I'm currently working with one book but will do some shopping while I am there. As the writing uses classical Tibetan I think those sources will come into play later - but I do not want to pollute my learning with Tibetan now.

Kuikentje: Danke! Ich war nicht da für mehrer monate als mein Arbeit war sehr stressig! Aber Ich bin wieder hier. Bis bald!

tomsawyer: Ich freut mich auch dich kennenzulernen! Hoffentlich werde ich konsequenter in diesem Jahr. Ich freue mich auf eure "Posts" und die Arbeit mit Ihnen und dem Team!

Viele Gruße!

I just stumbled over this and got to write something because Denglish recently has became a topic here. Very good this sentence, but there is one thing. You never say "in XXXX" in German. But you can say "im Jahr 2011", but with "Jahr" omitted you have to omit "im"/"in" too. That's more enervating than Meeting or the pathetic Klapprechner. And as I just wrote about what can identify Germans speaking English, this maybe is something which identifies English speakers speaking German, but a lot of Germans in the meantime too. Please take no offense in this, as it could sound rude, but it wasn't intended to do so. By the way, if anyone feels the urge to correct my English, you are always welcome!

edit: Ok, Meeting is quite enervating.
edit 2: as I have once written something, I must add a second mistake, which I, stupid as I am, have not seen at first glance: "dieses Jahr" must be "in diesem Jahr" or "im kommenden Jahr" (if "dieses" does not relate to 2011). Goodbye and a happy new year!
