@Kisfröccs Thanks for your tip about the chart builder site but it seems too technical for me so I'll stick to my pre-historic way. I'm a bit of a dinosaur when it comes to computers.

HUNGARIAN

I maintained my target of 1 hour a day and I'm quite pleased that most of my Hungarian time was spent on speaking. I feel like my speaking is at a high A2, maybe low B1 level now.

EDIT: I've tried editing this post but its still ends up with all those   everywhere and I can't work out and haven't got time to delete them all and straighten out the post so I've left it looking like a mess as usual. Unfortunately my geekiness only extends to languages and evidently not to computers.

My week 5 has been a little more productive then week 4, mainly because I had a free weekend and used it for as much language study as possible. Last week now and I'm targeting a top 10 finish in the overall hours studied table. At the moment I'm about 7th or 8th.

HUNGARIAN

                          WEEK   5      & nbsp;      ;        OVERALL
Writing          ;    1 hr 5   mins      & nbsp;   &nbs p;     7 hours 40 minutes
Grammar          ;    1 hr 40   minutes     &nb sp;    & nbsp; 6 hours 20 minutes
Speaking        &nbs p;    3 hrs 15 minutes          ;  14 hours 20 minutes
Listening        &nb sp;   1 hr 15 minutes          5 hours 20 minutes
Reading          ;    1 hr 40   minutes     &nb sp;    & nbsp; 5 hours 30 minutes
TV/Film          ;    0   minutes &nb sp;        & nbsp;        2 hours

WEEK 5 TOTAL - 8 hours 55 minutes
TOTAL FOR HUNGARIAN - 41 hours 10 minutes

So my target of 42 hours (1 hour a day) for the whole 6 weeks was already nearly passed by week 5 and I've already done more than 50 minutes of Hungarian today (start of week 6) so I've now passed it. Success!

CZECH

                          WEEK   5      & nbsp;    ;        OVERALL
Learning With Texts     10   mins& nbsp;         &nbs p;   8 hours 55 minutes
TV/Film          ;    5 hrs 20   mins           &nbs p; 25 hours 15 minutes
Novel         & nbsp;        3 hrs 40 mins         &n bsp;14 hours 20 minutes
Extra Conversation     0    ;mins          &nbs p;     4   hours 55 minutes
Music         & nbsp;       35   ; minutes          ;     1 hour 45 minutes
Anki          &nbs p;         &nbs p;2 hrs 15 mins     9 hours 5 minutes
Grammar          ;        0  &n bsp; mins           &nbs p;    20 minutes

WEEK 5 TOTAL - 12 hours
TOTAL FOR CZECH - 64 hours 35 minutes

SPANISH

                              WEEK   5      & nbsp;   OVERALL
Writing          ;        0  &n bsp;mins          2 hours 20 minutes
Speaking        &nbs p;        1 hr 20 mins     2 hours 15 minutes
Reading          ;        0  &n bsp;mins          &n bsp;  15 minutes

WEEK 5 TOTAL - 1 hour 20 minutes
TOTAL FOR Spanish - 4 hours 50 minutes

For the first time I felt like my Hungarian was really starting to interfere with my Spanish when I was speaking so I tried to break through it by speaking a little more than in previous weeks. It also has to be a good sign for my Hungarian.

SLOVAK
                            WEEK   5    ;   & nbsp;    OVERALL
Music -           ;       0  &nbs p;        ;        20 minutes
Learning with Texts -   0      &nbs p;    ;        15 minutes
TV -           ;          0           ;        20 minutes
Grammar -           ;    0     &nbs p;         &nbs p;  10 minutes

WEEK 5 TOTAL - 0 minutes
TOTAL FOR SLOVAK - 1 hour 5 minutes

So another disappointing performance by Slovak! I did listen to quite a lot of Slovak music and heard it spoken a fair bit on TV but I wasn't actively trying to learn it so I didn't count it.

The 6 week challenge is over and it's been a fantastic boost to my languages abilities. My speaking in Hungarian has improved considerably, maybe to a low B1 level and my active vocabulary has increased quite a lot due to the fact that I was trying to speak so often and having to look up lots of essential words and use them every day. I'm pleased that I managed to find time to do at least something in Czech and Hungarian every single day of the challenge. My Czech vocabulary has improved too a little bit, maybe by a couple of hundred words (at least passively).

I finished 14th in the target language table which is better than last time (even though I did about 5 hours less) and more impressively I finished 6th in the overall language table and almost 5th! I didn't expect that and it's going to be hard to ever improve on that because I was really pushing myself to the limit of my free time.

RESULTS FROM WEEK 6 AND OVERALL

HUNGARIAN

............................WEEK 6......................OVERALL
Writing..................1 hr 15mins.................8 hours 55 minutes
Grammar..................2 hrs 5 mins.............8 hours 25 minutes
Speaking.................2 hrs 45 mins............17 hours 5 minutes
Listening................15 mins..................5 hours 35 minutes
Reading..................1 hr 45 mins.............7 hours 15 minutes
TV/Film..................0 mins......................2 hours

WEEK 6 TOTAL - 8 hours 5 minutes
TOTAL FOR HUNGARIAN - 49 hours 10 minutes

So my target of 42 hours (1 hour a day) for the whole 6 weeks was easily achieved and at the end I wanted to try to reach 50 hours but I didn't quite get there. Still a big success.

CZECH

....................................WEEK 5...................OVERALL
Learning With Texts...........15 mins...................9 hours 10 minutes
TV/Film.........................5 hrs 15 mins.............30 hours 30 minutes
Novel...........................0 mins....................14 hours 20 minutes
Extra Conversation...........3 hrs 30 mins...........8 hours 25 minutes
Music.............................10 mins.................1 hour 55 minutes
Anki.............................1 hr 45 mins.............10 hours 50 minutes
Grammar..........................0 mins...................20 minutes
Writing..........................35 mins..................35 minutes

WEEK 5 TOTAL - 11 hours 30 minutes
TOTAL FOR CZECH - 76 hours 5 minutes

A substantial amount when I consider that I didn't count a hell of a lot of speaking, reading and TV watching. Surely I'm going to improve in Czech if I keep up that level of immersion, even though I don't feel like I am and C2 feels as far away as ever.

SPANISH

...............................WEEK 5.........................OVERALL
Writing.......................0 mins........................2 hours 20 minutes
Speaking......................55 mins.......................3 hours 10 minutes
Reading.......................0 mins........................15 minutes

WEEK 5 TOTAL - 55 minutes
TOTAL FOR Spanish - 5 hours 45 minutes

Almost reached an hour a week but I didn't count a lot of reading and interaction so I'm satisfied.

SLOVAK
...................................WEEK 5.................OVERALL
Music............................0 mins..................20 minutes
Learning with Texts..............0 mins..................15 minutes
TV...............................10 mins.................30 minutes

WEEK 5 TOTAL - 10 minutes
TOTAL FOR SLOVAK - 1 hour 15 minutes

OVERALL HOURS OF STUDY - 132 HOURS 20 MINUTES!

It's great that you're still here. I've closed my log, and I think it was a wise move. I'm drowning under work, it's unbelievable. :)

B1. We both reached our goals ! Yeah !

I don't know if I'd claim B1 yet, only for writing and possibly speaking and reading at a low B1 level. I'm still a low A2 at listening.

But I do feel like I've more or less met my goals and I have 2 more weeks to cram in some more Hungarian and feel more comfortable about saying that I'm B1.

Thanks for the support as usual! I'll still be posting here until the end of the year, before starting a new log as part of our new team. I can't wait, should be great to be part of a bigger and more active team. Crossed fingers.

As the TAC 2011 is coming to an end, it’s time to summarise my year.

In my personal life it was unfortunately the worst year of my life, due to family and friend tragedies. In contrast, languages have provided me with a fantastically positive distraction and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the distraction and the sense of achievement it’s given me.

My goals from the beginning of the year are very different from the result! Here they are with the result too –

CZECH
Start – C1
Goal - maybe C2
Result - still C1.

I’ve found it so hard to get through this C1 level, I’ve been there for a couple of years and am starting to think that it’s impossible for me to get to C2 because my shy, stuttering speech (in English too) means that my speaking level will always hold me back. I did do a hell of a lot in Czech though and am very pleased with my input and attempted output.

SPANISH
Start – B2
Goal – solid C1 plus take the C1 or C2 exam.
Result – still B2 and no exam taken.

The rise of Hungarian and finding out that a C1 exam now exists for Czech changed my Spanish targets. I still maintained my Spanish quite well with plenty of talking and lots of emails and letters and a few films plus some quite intensive study in the Summer, but I can’t say that I improved at all. Still I’m happy to have done enough to not get worse.

CHINESE MANDARIN
Start – A1/A2
Goal – A2
Result – lower than A1!

I ended up doing very little in Mandarin. Hungarian took away all of my planned Mandarin time and suited me much more as a language. I think I’ve realized that for whatever reason, Eastern European/Slavic and Finno-Ugric languages really do it for me.

My attempts at writing in pinyin on HTLAL were met with ridicule and no help whatsoever, which is in complete contrast to my attempts in Hungarian. Anyway, Hungarian won the battle big time and now I can’t see myself returning to Mandarin, unless a class opens up or I make friends with a native speaker of the language.

HUNGARIAN
Start - nothing
Goal – B1
Result – Low B1 in writing, speaking and reading, low A2 in listening

The big success of the year for me. I had 4 or 5 intensive spells of Hungarian study and always did something even in the less active periods. The recent 6 week challenge really helped me get the final push into a satisfactory level for the year. I fell in love with everything about the language and through my 2 trips to Hungary in February and July I also fell in love with the country and food.

The Hungarian thread is evidence of my progress in Hungarian and thanks mainly to Maxval, Kisfröccs, Chung and me the thread had become one of the most viewed and used on the forum.

My motivation and progress in Hungarian would never have been the same without the immense help from Kisfröccs and Maxval and sometimes from Chung.

Kisfröccs introduced me to so many Hungarian songs and motivated me with stories and photos from Hungary and with her vocabulary lists and general positivity towards the language.

Maxval tirelessly gave me incredibly important corrections based on my written self-imposed assignments, I learned so much from him.

So many thanks to them both and also to others who helped me at various stages during the year, for example Chung and Lapislazuli.

In the real world very few people have any idea about my Hungarian studies, so this little online community has been a great support and motivation for me.

OTHER

I’ve picked up bits and pieces of Slovak and Russian and hope to do more with those and other Slavic languages next year.
