I don’t know why I study languages. Neither do I know if I’m particularly talented in
it. I have no reason to learn them, know nobody that speaks them and have no goals to achieve in them. It’s not a particularly easy hobby, either. So why, WHY do I do this to myself? Anyway, as that question won’t be answered soon I might as well start logging to organise my efforts. So far I have developed a rather good (I think) reading comprehension in Spanish. I have just started Italian, so my skills with that language are pretty nonexistent. Methods Spanish: I have many wordlists, grouped in categories, to study. I know this is usually considered an ineffective way to study a language, but it seems to work quite fine for me. I will try to learn at least 4 pages a day during the week, using Saturday/Sunday to revise the words I have learned and to memorise those stubborn words that simply refuse to enter my brain. I will also start to revise the words I have learned before now systematically. I will start reading Spanish books more regularly, making notes of new words and phrases. I should probably also find some Spanish videos to watch… Italian: I am currently using a self-study course divided into weeks. I usually finish these weeks a bit sooner because of their similarities to Spanish and Latin. I will attempt to finish about 1 1/2 weeks per week. After this, I will buy a proper Italian dictionary and start the advanced course. Ps- criticism welcome 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

My only criticism is: why do you study so many romance languages?

Well, I just memorized my target 4 pages of Spanish words. I'm not going to post them
all, that would take too long, but I'll rather just post some of those characteristically stubborn ones... (All words in category 'environment') el acontecimiento -event la legumbre -vegetable el fertilizante -fertilizer el vertedero -dumping ground la marea negra -oil slick el agujero -hole el vidrio -glass
grade 9. I started Spanish because my dad bought a Spanish course and never got around to studying it. Now I'm going to finish what I started. (Also, resources for romance languages are more readily available.) I would like to learn some Germanic languages too, but it might be more sensible to learn them via Afrikaans. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Italian:
Agh! I forgot that the past participle has to agree with the direct object pronoun in the perfect tense! (that sounds worse than it is :) eg. l'ho visto=I have seen him l'ho vista=I have seen her Learned the ordinal numbers. New irregular past participles: aprire - aperto chiedere - chiesto chiudere - chiuso mettere - messo scrivere - scritto perdere - perso offrire - offerto Spanish: finished the 4 pages of words. Some of those(mean tone in voice) ones: (pertaining to family) el ahijado -godson el cuňado -brother-in-law el suegro -father-in-law el yerno -son-in-law la nuera -daughter-in-law la pareja -couple 1 person has voted this message useful |
