I'm going to Puerto Rico this June and will stay with family there for a few weeks. What I'm wondering is how can I make the most of this opportunity to improve my Spanish the most? What techniques do you guys use when undergoing immersion?

Just 1: Don't speak English!
(Don't write it, no cellphone, no TV, no computer etc.)

just one or two more:
1) carry a small notebook (paper or digital) and write things down,
2) listen and look attentively and specifically for things that deserve to be jotted down

I have also experience with staying with host families in foreign countries. My advice is to take part in the family life actively and communicate with the family members a lot. Take notes of the new words you encounter and ask a lot of questions about the culture, the country etc. to show your serious interest.

I beg to differ Iversen - don't jot things down. It's time to actually start
speaking
If it's only for a few weeks speaking and listening should be the number 1 priority.
