dampingwire comes from a conversation many years ago: it's part of a Trinitron monitor.
The dampingwire is one of the (potentially) visible support wires: once it's pointed out to you it was said to be hard to ignore.

So in Italian I'd probably say "filo di smorzamento" or "filo smorzatore" but I don't know how it would actually been referred to in
Italy back in the day. Given the dearth of Trinitron monitors these days, I suppose I'm not likely to ever find out.
