Over the course of a week or so doing several sets of these exercises a day, I got to the point where my tongue could reach the retroflex sounds on the alveolar ridge no problem. Within 2 or 3 weeks I'd got to the point where I could do retroflex sounds off my soft palette (not a particularly useful skill, admittedly, I was just curious where the limits were!).

This is interesting to hear. Does anyone have any data on the distribution of range of tongue motion among people? I'd heard that some people have a tighter piece of skin under their tongue, but I hadn't really thought much about the ability to reach the retroflex position, since it was never a challenge for me. I guess I should count myself as lucky that I can reach my tongue behind my uvula without effort.
Any others that find retroflex hard to reach? I'm curious how common this is.
