I'm a beginner too, but let me try to help.

Это дорогая рубашка. (This is an expensive shirt.)
Эта рубашка дорогая. (This shirt is expensive.)
Это моя семья. (This is my family.)
Эта семья моя. (This family is the mine.)

Какая это рубашка? - Possible answers:
- Это новая рубашка. (It is a new shirt.)
- Эта рубашка новая. (This shirt is new.)

Эта is a demonstrative pronoun, it means "this one" (in French "cette", in Italian "questa", in Spanish "esta").
