In Spanish one always knows where to place the stress, but not so in Italian. Why isn't the accent mark used like in Spanish? it would make learning the language much easier.
Are there any readers aimed at beginners which indicate which syllable is stressed in the text? 1 person has voted this message useful | |

It's almost always the penultimate syllable, unless there's a grave accent on the last
letter, in which case the last syllable is stressed. For example: Papa = Pope Papà = Dad The only difference is the placement of the stress. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Why isn't the accent mark used like in Spanish? It would make learning the language much easier.
Orthography serves the need of the native, not the learner. In my opinion the stress is in Italian only a minor problem. If one were looking for more accents, it would be more desirable, if they could mark the difference between open and closed vowels, like vénti (twenty) and vènti (winds). Are there any readers aimed at beginners which indicate which syllable is stressed in the text? In my "Letture Graduate Per Stranieri", published by Hueber, the stress accent is marked by underlining of the vowel, when it does not fall on the penultimate. They write: "Il trattino sotto alcune vocali vuole indicare la sillaba su cui cade l'accento tonico. Di solito, però, in Italiano l'accento tonico cade sulle penultima sillaba" 1 person has voted this message useful | |

L'accento tomico è un elemento integrale della coniugazione verbale. Per esempio nelle forme della terza persona plurale l'accento cade di solito sulla sillaba prepenultimata, salve nel futuro.
Nel infinito della seconda coniugazione, l'accento puo cadere o sulla sillaba penultimata o sulla prepenultimata dipendendo del verbo in questione, e questi due gruppi di verbi tendono a variare anche in altre parti della coniugazione, per esempio nel passato remoto. Note that stress is not indicated in English either, where it's almost entirely unpredictable.
