As I stated somewhere else in the forum what I do to address that is delay subs by about 1.5 seconds. That way you can read when you miss something or need confirmation, and OTOH you quickly learn to not use subs as a way not to make an effort to understand what you hear, for reading ALL the subtitles with a delay is very likely to get you lost or give you a headache. Obviously watching something just once is also twice as fast as your method -- that is, if watching something once is enough for you.

I never thought of that, but I wouldn't know how to do it anyway. I'm also not sure I wouldn't end up lost and with a headache, but I suppose I would get used to it.

The things I've been watching have the subtitles already there. I actually just cover them with paper when I want to watch something without subtitles :} I know it's possible to download and add the subs yourself, but I don't know how to do it, so I never bothered.

(I know I'm a primitive cave woman, so go ahead and laugh if you want.)

I don't know which video player you use but with VLC (VideoLAN) it's pretty
straightforward. If you have a movie called Movie.m4v, you download your subtitles from
wherever and put them in the same directory and name them Movie.srs. Fire up VLC, start
your movie and you are done (you might need to switch on subtitles under audio but mine
defaults to doing that anyway).

The only thing tricky with subs is to find them online. Well I think. I got a nice tip with a link to a site with
japanese subs to a lot of anime including Naruto. I don't know what other popular anime was there off hand.
I think the files they have would work great with subs to srs when I have time/energy to mess with that.

Just posting again.. I downloaded Anki to my phone. I thought I'd give it another go since well they have a
new version and all. I'm using it on a Samsung Note 2. The #1 popular deck that came up when I searched
for Japanese language decks was a sentence deck with a ton of examples. 8,000 or so. Although the
description says the advanced sentences have typos. Side 1 has the sentence in Japanese and side 2 has
furigana and an English translation. It looks really good. I love the furigana - I can't get that to work without
tons of effort on Flashcards Deluxe. This deck doesn't have audio. Would be nice but isn't needed - I'm
liking it a lot.

The app seems to link up somehow with aedict. I have a few other dictionaries on the phone but don't seem
to be able to select them instead. I tried highlighting a word in the sentence and using the lookup feature and
it didn't work so well. It wasn't found. A little annoying. I was curious about kanji information and well what
the dictionary translation was although the English translation of the sentence kind of makes that redundant.
Some less simple sentences I might need to look up the word later though.

I'm gonna play with it some more. I don't anticipate moving my current decks from Flashcards Deluxe to Anki
but I think I am gonna give this sentence deck a try.

good luck with working with anki, I really like using it, even though I think that a few settings can be a pain to
configure without screwing everything up.

also, be careful with the deck you downloaded. I thought about downloading as well but I heard that there are some
errors even with the beginner vocab. Then again, I haven't used it, so I don't know for sure.

I am currently using the Core 2k/6k Optimized deck. I have only started using it today so I cannot really say for
sure, but seeing as the sentences are ordered (in Kanji Odyssey order) I really like it because it starts of with a lot of
"easy" stuff before getting more difficult. it also has full audio for all the 5999 sentences included. :)

I only ever work with decks I make myself, and I know a few errors creep into that too (although I get the benefit of feeling very clever when I can correct something I'm reviewing)! Even published textbooks are not immune from mistakes and typos. It's one reason why using a mixture of different resources and methods, at least to a certain extent, is not a bad idea at all.

I might try both decks. I grabbed the one you mentioned but the sounds and pictures didn't download
automatically. I forget how I got the sounds to work with the old anki but I'll work it out. As long as there
aren't a lot of mistakes I think I'll be ok with it. Of course, since it's not my deck, if there are mistakes I
don't have the dictionary or whatever was used for the deck go double check and fix it. I'm wondering if
the author made the furigana or if anki does it automatically? It's pretty sweet. I also really like that with
anki you can have the card repeat very quickly and then make it repeat in 10 minutes and then make it
repeat some other day. That's great for learning. My other srs let's you pick one but not both. Ie you can
have it repeat in the next round and then some other day or you can make it repeat 15 minutes later and
then some other day but not the three step process that anki does.

I forgot to mention that *facepalm* you can download the media files at
the RevTK forum

all you have to do is unzip the files into the anki media folder. mine is under:
documents/anki/myankiusername/collection.media
but I am on a Mac, I think it also should be in the my documents folder for windows.

also, there is an addon called" Japanese Support" that automatically generates furigana for you. I read, in one of the
threads at RevTK, that there might be a few mistakes with the furigana as well because of that. I never used it
though so I don't know whether or not the mistakes have been fixed in the mean time.
