Anime and video games are full of "useless" vocabulary, but I hate the term "useless"
because you kind of have to know these to understand anime, and judging by your huge Naruto avatar of yours, I suspect that anime is part of your motivation to learn Japanese. :p Example of a word often seen in Zelda is 封印, which is not among the 20k most common words, but it is mentioned in several Zelda games, and useful if you like Zelda. It means "seal" or "stamp", and is used in the sense of "sealing Ganondorf in the sacret realm." I agree about German though... My SRS:immertion ratio in German is about 5:95 because SRSing isn't that effective in my opinion. 封印 was in my SRS deck.. I can't recall if it got in there from my reading part of a Naruto script. I think so. If I encountered it that quickly then it's pretty common in fantasy genre stories. Glad I learned it lol. Another win for the Naruto deck. I think I need to study more Naruto...

I've come to believe there's no such thing as useless vocabulary. Which domains and activities you'll need vocabulary for is shaped by your interests and needs anyway. On a few occasions I encountered some word in a book and thought to myself "there's no way I need this word", only to find it showing up, in the wild, in unexpected contexts. The great thing is that just by the word showing up unexpectedly really helped me to learn it!

haha. I don't know if I'll convince anyone but I'll post something later. If I post it in Japanese I'm sure to fail to convince anyone I know what I'm talking about due to grammar / idiom mistakes galore.. but I might try anyway.
I finally caught up my SRS deck this morning. OMG I let it go for a couple weeks and that was a pain in the butt. A lot of cards due dates got pushed way back though so that was nice. I haven't added new cards to this deck in a while (hence I was so far behind). Gonna start moving forward again.. It seems I lost the kanji dictionary in Rikai-sama. I think Firefox self updated to version 20 and that may have caused it. This stinks. I downloaded the latest Rikai-sama again but it doesn't seem to matter.
*edit* seems to work fine on regular webpages.. it's reading this .ass file that it can't seem to use the kanji dictionary... the English/names dictionaries work though. Frustrating. Edited by kraemder on 05 April 2013 at 8:33pm 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

I did a little practicing in front of the class for my speech. On Saturday I had actually spent a pretty good
amount of time memorizing it so there was a lot in my head but it's not solid yet really. The teacher kept getting on me for pausing to think about the correct post position on a word. If I want to pause to think, that's fine, but that's NOT where to do it was pretty much his advice. I guess just more memorizing will make that better. When you have to stop and think about what comes next it's obviously going to be harder... and it's been forever since I got up in front of people and talked. Not that I was ever very good at it. Actually I think I'm better now than before just because I'm older but still. I also figured out, to my surprise, that I didn't need to have the speech in front of me to practice it. Driving to class I could just recite what I knew. I guess I could do that in other situations too. This is actually the first speech I've tried to memorize so that's new to me. My other speeches from school I didn't memorize per se and just got the gist of what I needed to say in my head and then went with that. If it was in English that was more or less ok, I just talked until it seemed like I was done and then sat down. I had a Spanish presentation once though and that didn't work so well... I ended up just pulling the written text out and reading off of it. I don't want to do that for this. I'm not very fluent in Japanese so if I had to talk it would be.. well I could say something but memorizing would definitely be to my advantage. Regarding studying. I'm doing pretty well with my SRS deck miraculously. Well not too miraculously since it was just the weekend so I had time to keep it up to snuff. But I'm happy with where it's at right now. I often make changes to the routine and words so it never really got to where an SRS deck should be - truly testing me on the words I needed to study when I needed to study them. It seems like it's there now. In part thanks to some recent changes to the algorithms by the app author. I'm sticking with side 1 kanji and side 2 kana/english. It eliminates a lot of the context problems you get where there's multiple answers, and I don't feel like it's overkill. I want to learn to recognize every word I've studied but there's a lot of synonyms and when speaking I don't really need a huge variety of words to choose from.. and this way should help me read better. I'm not practicing writing out kanji or words at all though. I suppose that's not going to get a lot better as a result. Oh well, I can come back to that later if I think it's important. I think the next, and only time that I will need to write out words using kanji is going to be for the extra credit section of the final for this course. Afterwards it probably won't come up again. I know a lot of Japanese people even struggle to remember to write kanji since they don't do it very much thanks to computers. 1 person has voted this message useful |
