There's a Japanese word I'm not going to forget in a hurry. Now, if they were only all like this...*sigh*

I succumbed to another impulse purchase and got levels 1-5 of Chinese Mandarin from Rosetta at their 'discount' of $250. I'm only flirting with Chinese, I've no ambitions to go nuts doing it like I have with Japanese. It's just something to do like reading a book in English is something to do. At least for now. Until I get sucked in haha.

If you look at the beginning of my log I think I felt the same way about Japanese.. hmm not sure. I really should read what the heck I was thinking back then. It's been a while.

I downloaded a pinyin app for the iPad. I listened to the four tones for the same pronunciation of wan. I know nothing of pinyin or Chinese really so this is just a first impression. There were 4 tones. I think tone 2 actually sounded like a speaking voice to me whereas the other tones, especially tone 1, really sounded like someone were singing notes to a song. I don't see myself actually speaking this language so that I could be understood. At best it will be a monologue of distorted gibberish with little resemblance to an actual human tongue. Language.

I'm feeling defeated already.

I wish this HTLAL forum had a high "sex ability".

I'm going to make a separate Chinese log just to keep things focused. I know when I look for other logs to read I really am interested in people studying the same languages as me. There's some cross over between Japanese and Chinese for sure. I know they offer Chinese at my school and the more ambitious students end up taking Chinese after they finish the Japanese. I'll probably post a bit about Chinese here as it relates to Japanese. Right now Chinese is shiny and new so I might be posting about it more.

I was listening to the introduction shows on ChinesePod101 and it was mentioned that there are a LOT of homophones in Chinese. Even with tones taken into account etc. So Japanese not having tones isn't really an issue I guess regarding all the homophones it has. One kind of thinks borrowing from a tonal language would create the homophones but they were already there. Big deal right?

Well apparently it's not uncommon for Chinese speakers to write out the kanji for the word they're saying in thin air to convey which homonym they're using. I'm sure this doesn't happen all the time but the idea that it does happen.. ha! I find it funny. Anyway. Had to share that.

Yeah I wonder if Japanese people ever write out kanji in the air to clarify what they're saying. Never heard of
them doing it so I'm sure it's rare.

I've been rewatching a lot if anime without subs. There's no excuse to turn on the subs when you've already
seen it so that's works really well. A lot of this anime I may have seen already but not so recently that I recall
every conversation. What I'm also finding is that I'm getting used to not having subs on period. So new anime
I sometimes am watching without and when I don't understand something it doesn't freak me out I just wait
for something I do understand.

I've seen it a few times but most of the time, Japanese will prefer give an example of a
(more simple) word using the same kanji.
For instance: 私は拓司 と申します。 「拓くの「ひら」で 、 司会の「し」 で書きます。」
It's kinda difficult to explain like that, but I'm sure you've already seen such a
situation without realizing it ;)

gbod had a post (I think to me) a while back about starting a new language in part to better appreciate how far I've come in Japanese. Just starting with Chinese and I totally feel like my Japanese rocks the house now haha. I can actually talk and have a conversation in Japanese and follow the gist of an anime and get a lot of the jokes. When all you study is this target language and nothing else for a really long time, you might end up just focusing on what you don't know. Which is a lot. But you lose perspective. I'm actually pretty happy with my Japanese, which makes me want to keep learning.
