And I had my German iTalki lesson. The tutor didn't have her camera on but otherwise it was very enjoyable. I was thinking how far my Japanese had come yesterday but German is still definitely in the lead although I neglect it so much. There's no question that I can have a conversation with a German person and they can just talk and don't have to grade their language. Well not much anyway. With my Japanese tutor I did a lot of the talking in part because that way I wouldn't get confused lol. This was a native German speaker while the other German teacher I had a couple weeks ago spoke it as a 2nd language. She was very advanced but it's not the same. It's easier to understand a native speaker. There were times that I didn't understand the other teacher although she was saying words that I know but that wasn't an issue at all today. I was thinking that I had lost my touch. The other person's accent was pretty good really but for whatever reason somehow it was hard to understand. I'm sure I'd get used to it more.
Anyway, the teacher seemed to think I didn't need to study grammar with her in the lessons - but she did correct my mistakes and write down how it should be in the text box. Some of the mistakes were because I didn't know the right vocabulary for the context and some were just because I was talking freely and forgot to conjugate the verb. The latter I don't really care about but she diligently let me know I goofed.. Anyway. I haven't done any flashcards for the past week in German. I was thinking of just doing the vocabulary I learn on the Kindle, in the Kindle and not putting it in the SRS app and well the vocabulary I get from other sources will go in the SRS app I guess. It would take more time to copy vocab into the SRS app so that's why I'm not bothering. But if I am too lazy about studying I might have to make myself do it anyway. 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

Just looking at my last post. I transition with anyway a bit too much. But I'm not about to go back and edit my posts even if it would make me look smarter =).
I'm working through this 'new' RTK 1 deck I got off Anki Shared decks. (it's called Heisigs RTK 6th Edition - stories, stroke diagrams - readings). The stroke diagrams looked great on my Windows PC and didn't show up at all on my iPad. I switched it to just use stroke order fonts. The deck includes a huge list of vocabulary associated with the kanji but the default setup doesn't display it so I added that to side 2.. And I added the On and Kun readings to side 1. In the past I've made myself try to learn kanji sounds while doing RTK and it didn't work out.. I burned out. But just having them right there on side 1 where I can read them is helpful. It also helps me remember the correct kanji when the English keyword is really just arbitrarily different from another keyword. And I re-arranged side 2 putting the kanji sounds above the stories. It was a bit annoying to fix the deck the way I wanted it but I'm happy with the results. I was thinking of actually switching to Anki so I could upload my decks to the shared site. I think I make some pretty nice decks and it would be fun to share them. Of course, some of the decks include clips from anime and such and I don't know if that violates copyright and is enforced. I get the impression if it violates it then it's not enforced. If someone complained I could just make lists of vocabulary without the sentences and audio clips. But I'd have to learn more about Anki to do this. I look at the setups for these Anki decks and think what a pain in the butt it must be to make Anki decks from scratch. I was being consistent with studying RTK 1 for a while but I want to make it more my focus. Mostly I want to get through RTK 3 because it seems a lot of the vocabulary I study draws upon kanji from it. Even though I'm rusty on some RTK 1 kanji if I study the keyword a little it comes back really quickly but the kanji I never studied takes longer to absorb. I like it when I recognize all the kanji I'm looking at and real Japanese writing uses a heck of a lot of kanji. Especially online. People write stuff online and they don't give a hoot about the 常用 kanji list and never put furigana or anything. So I'm going to cut back on adding vocabulary as fast as possible to my vocab decks and just focus on reviews and RTK I think. I'll add some words - I made a deck I think last weekend with a lot of vocabulary that still hasn't become 'active'. But I'm not going to go reading an anime script and adding 100-150 new words this weekend or whatever. I want to focus on kanji right now. And I want to get my grammar deck going too... Although my vocabulary still has a ways to go I think talking on Skype lately has boosted my confidence in my vocabulary. For the longest time I just kept thinking my vocabulary stank and that was the biggest thing to work on. Vocabulary is so important. *edit* Oh I nearly forgot this.. and it was what prompted me to come post. This 6th edition of RTK has 2200 kanji (probably old news but new to me lol). I really don't know what the difference is.. maybe just all the 常用 kanji to go with the ones that Heisig thought we might as well learn since we knew the primitives anyway? Regardless, I like it. I get to learn a new kanji that I've never seen before every 10 kanji or so. Well, some I did already know. 貼る for example I think everyone picks up. 965 cards into the RTK deck. Even if I've forgotten stuff and dont get it right on the first try, in general, it's
way easier than the new ones. After 10 minutes I often forget them and have to get them right again. Too bad I have work tomorrow. I wanna get through this RTK thing as fast as I can. I just had my tutoring session with my tutor. We were reading Harry Potter and the Prisoner from Azkaban. I hadn't read Potter in a while and so it went a bit slow. Anyway. I asked if some words were hard to understand if you didn't have the kanji in front of you - like if you were listening to someone else read for you. She said sometimes words that are easily understood because they can see the kanji are indeed less intuitive if you're just listening. The example was 癪. I think it's more commonly used in a compound which would be no problem but by itself she said it could be harder even for Japanese. If someone were reading a story for example. It's not as bad as I feared though. The reader just pauses a little while reading to give the listener a moment to think a little and then the listener can understand fine. Because they visualize the kanji in their head.
This language is way too integrated with kanji for my taste. What was I thinking studying it. With western languages the written language definitely has impacted the spoken language but nowhere near to the extent as with Japanese. Argh!!! Oh well. Nobody said Harry Potter was an ideal text for learning Japanese. They just said it was easily available compared to everything else. 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

Well my goal of not adding much vocabulary to only focus on RTK went splat. I found that I had tons of inactive cards from a couple of anime decks I made a few weeks ago and I didn't want that vocabulary just sitting there unstudied. So I went through and activated them and that was about 150 words or so. It's been a few days and it's sort of getting a little easier. Sort of. They're kicking my butt really. I've noticed that a lot of words that I get from anime that aren't in the core 6k or 10k even usually take longer to stick. Not sure why. I mean sure, they're likely less common but it's not like I'm walking around Japan getting exposed to the language constantly. I found that to be true with German.. when I went there as a noobie and tried studying vocabulary by brute force using a rather nice little langenscheidt book I had that grouped the most 2000 useful words into categories. Within the categories it then separated those in the 1st 1000 and those in the next 1000. I figured I'd just study a category and knock it all out at once. I put a lot of effort into it and the first 1000 group stuck first and the 2000 group was super recalcitrant. I attributed it to being in Germany or something and getting random exposure of the language.
Anyway, I fought through my reviews today and it was painful. I particularly hate words like 蔑む. I thought it was neat that I had recently reviewed this kanji in RTK. And that is neat. But the darn thing has three syllables wrapped up in one kanji. I HATE THAT. さげすむ in case you're wondering. Maybe writing it here will help it stay. Please stay. I talked about this app on my iPhone called JFlash that I liked. It isn't SRS but more of a leitner style of repetition and if you use the app for a couple hours a day (sounds like a lot but you can squeeze in a lot of studying on breaks and lunch etc.) You review cards that you're learning a lot more often than an SRS will typically test you. And I think that has benefits. And especially since I put so many awful vocabulary words in this deck all at once I think I particularly need to review them some more. So against my will I will be studying them even more today. Yay. The idea is that it'll be less painful to get through them if I don't wait until they're due. 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

I typed that one and was disappointed because the kanji came up for despise (also on the list) instead of what I wanted. Not a good sign. What I really despise is.. 貫く. Darn. I finally posted to the The Language Challenge Twitter Bot. I thought I would blow through the movie part by watching lots of anime w/o subs. I didn't though. I went on a sub watching blitz. In part because I found out some other people in my Japanese class were anime fans and I wanted to make sure I could talk about the shows properly. But class is over now so they're gone. I'm into Fairy Tale (it was recommended to me in class) and I'm up to show 78 now.. I just watched several w/o subs today and I understand more than I expected. I think in general it's on the easier to understand side although sometimes, like any anime, the authors decide to bring the language level up a notch. But overall pretty easy to follow. And the show is addictive. I haven't read the rules on reading books yet so I don't know how to count manga. I think I'll be reading manga for a while since it's so much easier and therefore more fun.
