Oh. There's something I need to add regarding the kindle paperwhite. It comes with a really nice Japanese to English dictionary. Shogakukan Progressive Japanese-English Dictionary. It's a nice step up from the JEDICT dictionary we all have used to death. The example sentences are organized a lot better and they're.. edited. So you can trust them.
Although when you're reading a book or something you generally don't -need- example sentences you just need a translation of some kind and based on what you're reading you'll figure out the rest. But it's still nice. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

I know someone was talking about it in their journal but I can't remember which one and I didn't bookmark all my Japanese journals (I just wait for an e-mail to come saying someone posted something).
anyway - anyone with access to the Amazon Japan kindle ebooks.. how is the selection? I'd like to get my hands on on more stuff that's translated from English into Japanese that I've read already. Is there much of a selection of that? Reading translations from your own language you've already read is the best gateway into the real native material is my experience. I do have all the Potter books to read (and I'm enjoying it right now) but variety is so nice. Any fantasy translations would be perfect for me - Tolkien or Dungeon and Dragon novels like Dragonlance or even English literature like Charles Dickens. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

I'm in Portland visiting my sister again. And that's means I get to visit the Japanese book store. I'll be heading
over pretty soon. I brought an extra bag to bring stuff back. I'm several chapters into the 2nd Harry potter book and it's really enjoyable. It's feeling more and more like when I read something in German and I'm feeling very positive about that. The kindle saves vocab and I dislike their flashcard function but you can skip that if you want. It lists vocab - several on a page written in kanji and if you tap it then it tells you the definition and you can pull up the sentence it was used in the book. It's like when I just made vocab lists in my notebook with German but better. The kindle is really easy to read and it seems like they improved the word selection functionality as if you tap a word it does a good job of highlighting the word without you're having to manually drag your finger over each letter. The kindle is a bit slow processor wise but you get used to that. However if the new kindle this year has a faster CPU that would be a big selling point for me. I'm reading lots more Japanese now and I'm kind of excited about how that will affect me. I'm thinking of also importing scripts of anime to read into the kindle. Getting access to Amazon JP was simple for me:
Just get a Japanese address, register with that on JP Amazon (preferably with another email, so you don't lose your content), enter a Japanese address (which you can get for free at Tenso) into the one-click address section as well as in the My Kindle section, and that should be it. At least that's what's been working for me. (i.e. I haven't been busted illegally giving them my money yet.) Personally, I didn't like the Japanese translatioon of the Goblet of Fire; the German version at least translated the names better; Fleur and Wurmschanz sound a lot better than Huraa and Waamuteeru. Before importing the scripts, make sure you run them through Calibre first, so that they'll look nicer; Kindle books, and even paper books, don't really look that good without text justification. EDIT: I haven't studied the selection too well, but I did notice that there were no Murakami books there. It seems like there are quite a few light novels there though, and I did find translations of the Song of Ice and Fire books. Wait you got a Japanese-English dictionary on the Paperwhite? I only have a Japanese-Japanese one, which is kind of
nice, but I'm not quite there with being able to use a J-J only dictionary. I installed a J-E dict, but had to specifically swap out the dictionary file and somehow it updated or whatever and overwrote it again with the default, and I haven't bothered to swap it again. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Well I have the 2nd generation paperwhite. That might make a difference. I don't have to do any hacking of
the dictionary files like you had to do with the old kindles. And while you're reading if you have other Japanese dictionaries and want to check it in the other dictionary you just tap the dictionary on the kindle without leaving the book and pick the other one. That's actually easier to do on the iPad app than the kindle in part since the iPad has a much faster processor. But it's not bad on the paperwhite. I'm thinking I am gonna try doing Japanese Japanese and use the English only when needed. If the kindle can do it. On the iPad that's no problem at all. Except the iPad doesn't save vocab words for you so I want to keep using the kindle for that reason. I like make a video later to show what I'm doing. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Yeah I have the newer one also, but the only dictionary available was Japanese-Japanese
with no options to download or install others even if I switch the device language to Japanese. So I haven't been able to figure out a way to install a second dictionary without just overwriting the first one. 1 person has voted this message useful |
