I'm making a small adjustment to studying vocabulary. I was just sort of putting everything into one deck
and studying all cards as they came due which is sort of the idea behind anki and SRS. As mentioned, I was intending to just start a new deck next month. Not a bad idea really but I"m going to organize my vocabulary according to where I get it so I'll have lots of smaller lists. And if I want to go back and reread something I'll just study the vocabulary. And if it's something I'm currently spending a lot of time on like 耳 から覚える文法N2 then I'll probably review it a lot longer. I'm liking the 耳から覚える series actually. I have the audio on my iPhone for listening to whenever and it's nice. And I understand the explanations pretty well too. I don't know about the exercises or if I'll even do them though. As for this month's team challenge to learn a song by heart, I don't know how well I'll do. It's getting pretty late in the month and I picked the song last weekend and actually got the lyrics today. I have a little time left so it's not hopeless but man there's a lot of lyrics! I made a small vocab list from the song but really there wasn't too much I didn't know and I could read the kanji too for the most part. But it's long. Good luck to me. My posts are gone? I"m so confused.
I talked to someone who spent three years in Japan, two as a high school student, and couldn't pass the N2. I feel better about not passing. They said it as the kanji that kept them back. I asked how they functioned in Japanese classes at the high school level if they weren't able to pass the N2 - I had the impression that high school Japanese kids were, well, literate. I was told they sort of know kanji in high school. I guess they're still shaky kind of. Seems like their writing system is god awful and should be revised into an alphabet(s) =p. Only in my dreams. I know. They love their system because it's so bad. That's what makes it good. All the people who are good at kanji get to lord it over everyone else and they'll never give that up. 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

I put that address in the browser and my posts are still gone.. is a whole different website so everyone's
over there now? Confused.. Anyway. I did a language exchange with an iTalki person. I hadn't been very successful in the past with this - people didn't reply to my requests or I didn't reply to theirs if the timing weren't good. And I was nervous. I expect that goes both ways. Anyway it was a lot of fun. And free! The last part is really nice. I think it helped that my Japanese is better than it used to be and her English is well about the highest level possible for a Japanese person since she went to an American university. It was 20 years ago though so she's a little rusty but her active vocabulary is so big I expect her passive vocabulary to be even bigger and I'm lucky having someone so easy to talk to. I'll try to get more partners. Am I the only one who is only interested in talking with ladies in Japanese? I just don't really want to Skype guys. The server moved to a new IP address. The name (how-to-learn-any-language.com) should now resolve to the new address but you can still get to the old one if you want to (just don't bother posting there!). I'm still confused about what happened to the website and where I should post but here seems good maybe.
I have a new goal. Well it's been in my head for a while. 3 hours of anki every day. Excepting days with Japanese class maybe. I'm playing with the idea of making myself write kanji or not. I have a friend who is doing it and says it's helping him remember the kanji sounds so he can read NHK news better now. Of course, that could be just because he's studying a lot and not necessarily from writing kanji. You never really know about these things. But I'm thinking I should up my study time to 3 hours a day to get faster results. I'm kind of feeling burned out right now ironically due to slow results and can't help thinking that more results would be a really good thing. This would basically cut into my anime time and beer drinking time. It's good to relax after a long day of work but maybe anki can be relaxing? I'm still doing RTK 1. I briefly switched to drawing for a day instead of recognition and liked it but the next day I just was tired and didn't want to do reviews and it would have taken twice as long so that ended that. I don't think it's terribly useful to write kanji based off an English keyword anyway. I think it would have some use being able to spell/write actual Japanese however. But that's harder. So I'm not sure what I'll do. But I'd like to try for 3 hours of total anki every day. Maybe 2.5 hours 1st then 3.. ah well. I think Anki is more fun on my phone so I'll do more on my phone than the computer. 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

3 hours of Anki a day sounds like the short road to burnout to me. I've been really going at it with Anki for German in order to help build my vocabulary and reached the point where it was taking around 20 minutes a day, which I felt was too much already.
Anki is a great tool to support your learning in smaller doses, but unless you really love flashcards more than anything else I wouldn't make it the main event. I would definitely not cut into your anime time, because that's important language practice too! 2 persons have voted this message useful | ||||||

Been there :) I'm not sure if I've actually done three hours a day regularly, for a
longer period of time, but there definitely were days when I've surpassed 180 minutes. If you'd care for any advice: 1. Try not to spend too much time for each card (I've heard that Leitner himself advocated that). You can set a time limit after which Anki will show you the answer, so find a pace at which you feel comfortable, and set it just a bit faster. This should keep you focused, more efficient and create a sense of flow. 2. Don't write Kanji. Our memory is not bidirectional (I think). If you want to be able to read, make your reviews about reading. And unless you want to read single Kanji, read words (I'm not suggesting sentences). It might be just my personal experience, but I've been studying writing Hanzi for the last couple months, and at times I can write one just fine, but I don't recognize it during reading (although not as much if I've just learnt it). And when I was studying vocabulary extensively, sometimes I couldn't remember what a character meant when I saw it on its own, but I could read familiar words in which it appeared. 3. If you want to write, make some notes throughout the day, write a journal, etc. Writing actual text can be more motivating than writing out the characters during reviews. And this way, you won't be slowing them down. And lastly, don't worry if you won't accomplish your goals every day. 2 persons have voted this message useful |
