I was looking at Final Fantasy online this weekend thinking I would like to try to play a game in Japanese. Didn't take the plunge but it's something that's been on my mind for a while. I'm just going to keep focusing on reading. I've read various raw manga online but I'm currently focusing on this light novel 世界の終わりの世界縁. It seems like it's written with the idea that it would be converted into an anime. I feel like I'm reading an anime. I'm on page 47 right now and I'm starting to learn some of the vocabulary that's repeating but it gives me a headache dealing with all the new vocabulary that is used. The Core 6k is wonderful but it seems they didn't really consider fantasy light novels at all in its creation. I mentioned before that reading NHK news I had the feeling they really did their best to make the core useful in that regard. Not so right now. I'm all over the place on how to reinforce the vocabulary I'm seeing - use anki, Flashcard's Deluxe, Japanese for iOS, or none and see what I learn just by reading as much and often as I can.
It seems I'm settling down to use Japanese for iOS. It's the easiest option for importing new word lists and I have tons and tons of new words. Or just old words but haven't seen in so long that I need to add them for review if only to read the kanji effectively. But mostly new words. As for the kanji, in Japanese for iOS it's pretty easy to make a separate kanji deck but to make myself go study it is another thing. Doing the vocabulary deck is annoying enough as it is. So what I decided today is to just copy and paste the RTK stories for the unfamiliar kanji into the notes section of the vocab word so I can review that as I study the vocabulary. I use the app on iOS Kanji Stories for this - it has the top two stories off koohii for rtk1 and 3. In the rare cases when a kanji isn't included on either I try to make myself do a stupid little story myself. I'm thinking of doing a little Spanish along with Japanese since I'm not taking a course or anything I have some freedom on how I study. I pulled an easy story on my kindle last night and again I was just awe struck how easy it is to read Spanish compared to Japanese. And I haven't looked at Spanish in ages. But making real improvements in Spanish would definitely cut into my time. I'd like to find a dictionary app/program similar to rikai-chan or sama allowing me to create vocabulary lists for studying. A monolingual dictionary would be awesome for Spanish. But English would be good too. I don't care about sound files like Rikai-sama has just getting some cards generated quickly and easily would be good. Back to Japanese. I've pretty much abandoned the Core 6k/10k. Since what I'm trying to read right now seems to draw upon a different vocabulary than core it just doesn't make sense. I get that doing JLPT, I would want to focus on that vocabulary and the core is great for that. I might not do JLPT though. But I may. I've done it three years in a row so I guess chances are that I will ;). But since I'm not looking to do a big jump to N1 this year, and I was actually pretty close last year to passing, I'm not worried. Obviously come the fall I'll have to adjust my focus for the test but that's a little ways off. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Yeah, I swear, everything with Japanese is a completely different vocabulary. It always amazes me just how many words this language has.

I kind of would like to study Arabic too with it being such a huge world language and all. But there's only so
much time I the day but up to you. I personally think... Well this is hardly a new thought. But reading Japanese is not so beneficial because your mind can't just fill in the gaps since you honestly can't pronounce a word to yourself unless you already know it. Even if you recognize the kanji you never really know the pronunciation unless you know the word. This is huge. Also my reading speed in Japanese is just overall slower so I'm exposed to fewer words in the same amount of time reducing the benefit of reading. I still think reading is the best thing for improving Japanese despite these drawbacks. But I don't think I'll ever stop using flashcards for Japanese lie I have done for languages with alphabets. I haven't truly read books in Japanese yet however. Just websites really. I'm now making the effort so I'm hoping. 2 persons have voted this message useful | |

Sometimes I feel like I'm spending my life catching up on 'language debt' -- learning languages I should have picked up as a kid, but didn't. Maybe I don't have the sense of exploration, some people have. To me, it's familiar, even when it's not comprehensible.

I was using my little script that was written for me to rip a bunch of random pictures for a list of vocab. It
seems after a couple of days they (Google) cut me off. So annoying. When it works it makes creating flash cards a lot of fun. I think it resets once a month. I posted about this script before - someone or a couple of people wrote it for me on koohi forums. It's just a shell script of sorts. I started my accounting class this week. It's definitely going to cut into Japanese. It's a huge pain. It's summer course cram speed and I know nothing about accounting and it's about of vocabulary it seems. Well my script got busted. I guess they monitor your ip address or something and give you a quota per
month. I can still do it manually on google but whatever function the scrip uses gets monitored. It's good while it lasts. I ignored accounting this weekend and played around with Japanese. I got an account on Rosetta Stone again and did a tutoring session. Shocking but I'm way ahead of all the other learners. However, I can't produce all the sentence structures they go over so I think I could get some good use out of it. Of course, being able to fluently produce all of the sentence structures Rosetta teaches isn't really a goal that most learners achieve while they're using the software I don't think. Anyway so that is sort of on the to do list. I think I would make a production SRS deck though and rip some stuff off of rosetta. They just don't make you produce it.. it's multiple choice passive learning. However, that's assuming I can get them to give me the 4 studio sessions (live tutoring) per month I was expecting. I am only getting one at the moment and I've bought this produce from them in the past for other languages and it was 4. They could have reduced it but that's recent and well it significantly reduces the value of what they're selling. I have to be within the refund window. I will demand a refund if they don't change that. Doing the rosetta lessons and scaring the crap out of the other leaners is what it's all about ;). I've been trying to aggressively get language partners online for Skype and stuff. I know that people are busy with real life and doing a language exchange can be scary and it's new and different etc., so I'm trying to get as many people on my friends list as possible in the hopes one or two will actually work out. It's actually really fun getting emails from people I'm finding. People are not afraid at all to send messages but to do a Skype session seems to be a whole different animal. oh I forgot to add this. So I was thinking of how to make my Skype sessions more fun and interesting for the person I'm talking to. Aside from smiling and being friendly I was wondering if maybe I should get some ESL material. Anyone have any thoughts?

I did a tutor session with an iTalki tutor today. It was fun and she's sort of a gamer and told me she hadn't
played the latest final fantasy games but instead had watched them on YouTube. I was taken aback. I'm old and all and it hadn't really occurred to me to watch games on YouTube. I still have and interest in video games from growing up but I haven't been motivated to play any in a number of years. With the exception of final fantasy 13. So am now watching this Japanese guy play final fantasy 13 on YouTube in Japanese. He's making lots of comments as he goes and it seems interesting. A part of gaming that I missed was the doing it with others. When it's just me and nobody else to share it with it's not the same. Although it can still be fun obviously the games are often designed for one player etc. This seems like a great way to practice Japanese. The game movie he has Japanese subs turned on and they do help if you haven't heard a word used in this context then it helps it click for you. I'm hoping watching others play will rekindle some desire to play too. I don't want to be a video game geek who does nothing but game but I'd like to play at least some. 1 person has voted this message useful |
