In general I don't eat fish. There's a few exceptions, like tuna fish, or fish n' chips. Understandably (at least for me) I'm particularly wary of non-cooked fish. Anyway, there's this restaurant right next to me called Sushi Yukari. It's actually walking distance, which is pretty rare in Tucson. Anyway, in class today we talked about Japanese restaurants (I think Yukari may have been mentioned but tbh I don't know as I didn't know the full name of this restaurant before walking inside it). I think all the employees are Japanese. I was shocked lol. I've been to a different Japanese restaurant, Sakura, which is a very nice restaurant but except for the owner who isn't there I don't think anyone is Japanese. I think this was the 1st time where I walked into a business and heard real people speaking real Japanese to each other. I was thrilled. I'll be going back. They serve ramen which I've been dying to try since watching Naruto. It was really good (I got 沖縄 or Okinawa soba ramen). Anyway, I'll be going back. I might even try the sushi. It's just so cool that they speak Japanese. An American couple next to me were practicing their Japanese a little with the waitresses too.
Oh and there's a big anime/manga convention in Tucson this weekend - Con-Nichiwa. I'm going to be checking that out too. I have no idea what to expect and I doubt I'm anywhere as geeky as most of the people who will be attending unfortunately =/. Give me a few years though. I need to learn the kanji for the vocabulary I know and am learning. Having studied Heisig to death (and I'm going to continue doing that some more) I'm going to add another side to my vocab flashcards basically listing the heisig kanji meanings. I'll see how this goes. Most of the words we use shouldn't need too much in terms of a story to remember them. There'll be some exceptions of course. One kanji doesn't show up in the 1st book of heisig's kanji - 綺 . I found that odd since all the primitives are already there. The other kanji 麗 is in it (but I don't recognize it I think it's at the end). The word is 綺麗 or きれい. I'm thinking it's probably just written in kana usually anyway. How else could such a common word have kanji that's not included in the 1st 2000 odd kanji chosen by Heisig.
I really wish the Japanese had their own words for each kanji. I wonder why they don't. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||||||||

I got my listening quiz back. I saw the 30 in red at the top and my heart sank and then I saw that it's out of 36
so an 80. I really thought 30. I was so off balance when taking it. I dorked the 1st question which is annoying since i knew the answer and still got it wrong thanks to being an idiot. But i'll take the 80. Unfortunately with class back up and going I'm not finding any time to read potter. It's all about studying the class material and getting it perfect to get the best grade. I'm getting a little ahead of the schedule though so maybe later, we'll see. I think I might just surf the internet instead some. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||||||||

Well, you don't have the word "registrate" even though you have "registration". That's as odd as Japanese not having a kanji alone. And if a kanji is never used alone, it makes complete sense to not have a word for it. I guess 綺麗 is imported from Chinese (qǐlì is the Mandarin pronunciation, which resembles kirei to a certain extent and qǐlì obviously means beautiful). In other words, imagine őű meaning registration. If ő means registrate and ű means -tion then neither ő nor ű is used separately. I hope this made some sense.

I'm sure it makes sense to some people but not to me. For example, how do you spell the kanji of a word to someone verbally if you can't draw it for them? You can't. At least not that i can tell. You'd have to use it in a word or something and I'm sure it's a little pain in the butt. And for memorizing the spelling of words it's a bit of a pain. But Heisig's RTK sort of solves that. He gives each kanji a name based on one of the meanings. But it would be better if Japanese had an official textbook name for each kanji I think.

I personally always say surf the internet probably because I like the connotations of surfing better but they're equally good expressions to use. You don't need to eat raw fish. Sometimes at these American sushi restaurants of questionable quality I avoid everything raw, just because, err, you know. Who knows. Eat something safe the first few times and if that's good branch out. Still for getting 'in the spirit' broadening your fish input might be a good idea. Maybe go for the cooked eel or the cooked shrimp just to get going. These will be pretty safe, I think. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||||||||

People do one of three things: (1) they say a common word that the kanji is used in, for example "動物の「物」", (2) they describe the kanji using the radical plus the other elements, for example "「手偏」に「足」", or (3) they draw the kanji on the palm of their hand with the index finger of the other hand. Yes, it's probably not very efficient, but it always works eventually. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||||||||

I got a white board (wahoo!) I love new toys. It's a little one I could take with me to school if I wanted but I
probably won't bother since I don't do much flashcard type stuff and I take my iPad anyway. What I'm doing now with my vocab for class is using flashcards, testing testing the English (IE the front of the card is English) and then I write the Japanese kanji. I haven't been doing the okurigana but I probably might as well. I might not really be able to spell words correctly without practice and the whole point of this is to get extra credit points on the final (and really impress the sensei heh ;) The white board cost a whopping 5 bucks. A classmate said she got hers half price for $2 (cool people always get stuff cheaper... damnit) Anyway it's loads cheaper than an iPad. I'm comparing it to the iPad and I like writing on the whiteboard more than on the iPad (with stylus) but I like erasing better on the iPad heh. They're actually both about equally good in all. I'll probably use both for free form writing. There's some apps that specifically help/test you on writing kanji but I'm not going to use those until summer break. 1 person has voted this message useful |
