I recommend Kodansha's Furigana Japanese Dictionary and the Kanji Learner's Dictionary by the same publisher.

While seconding everything good said about Japanese electronic dictionaries and the alc.co.jp site, for a paper dictionary you cannot do better than the Shogakukan Progressive Dictionary. It's chock-a-block of useful example sentences -

Shogakukan progressive dictionary is one of the better J-E dictionaries. But honestly the best ones out there are of course the J-J dictionaries.
On the other hand when looking J-E online, I do quite like WWWJDIC. I find it quite a useful dictionary with audio and sample sentences on quite a lot (but unfortunately not all) words. 2 persons have voted this message useful |
