Hi there! I'm looking for useful Spanish textbooks for self study. My Spanish level is around B1, and I feel somehow stuck right now - rather frustrating, I must say. I'd love to reach level C2 at some point - are there any useful Spanish textbooks suitable for B1 learners who hope to improve their Spanish tremendously? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

This is good timing, since my Spanish has been boosted in recent months by the book
Breaking out of Beginner's Spanish. It will not take you to C2, since no book will do that, but it will certain move you on from B1. 3 persons have voted this message useful | |||

Splog is right. No book, per se, will take you to a specific level but I highly recommend "Breaking Out of Beginner's Spanish" as well. That book really helped me a lot several years ago. Combine that with talking with people in Spanish as often as you can via a skype, or in-person, language exchange and you will progress. Depending on where you have the most problems, grammar and vocabulary study may be helpful. Vocabulary can be increased by using flashcards, readers, and vocabulary builders. Grammar can be improved by going through a grammar workbook. "Spanish Verb Tenses" and "Spanish Pronouns and Prepositions" by Dorothy Richmond are well-regarded. I think they are OK for B1, but if you find them too easy, you can get further recommendations in this forum. Breaking Out... is an awesome book.
Here is another good one: Speed Up Your Spanish: Strategies to Avoid Common Errors Also good are: Speak Spanish like a Native (out of print - look for used copy) And the sequel: Speak Spanish Like a Native: The Sequel 5 persons have voted this message useful | |||

Thank you all for being helpful! Since "Breaking Out of Beginner's Spanish" seems to be a popular choice, I'll order it first and see how it goes!

I don't know about this "Breaking Out" book, but instead of "Speak Spanish like a Native" (which is 90 % English and 10% Spanish) I'd rather go for "Spanish among amigos".

I did enjoy the phrases in Spanish among Friends but it focused more on colloquial words then advanced grammar. It was still fun to try out on my Spanish friends though!
