Surely you don't consider MP3 players the latest technology, worthy of swooning.

I had a decent Creative MP3 player in 1997/1998.

Nobody in this thread has suggested that we should use new technology for its own sake.

Cassettes even hold a few objective advantages over digital media, like DavidW has mentioned.

The opposing views expressed in this thread show that they are subjective, not objective.

Additionally, analogue sound can be warmer, nicer, and more suitable for language
learning.

It's true that analogue sound has its advantages. However, the sound quality of most cassettes is not as good as
that of vinyl records or CDs, and language learning materials are rarely masterpieces of music anyway. Besides,
unless you use decent playback equipment it doesn't matter at all.

Finally, at least for some of us a little bit older, cassettes posses a certain charm to hold and
use.

They bring back warm memories from my childhood, but just like steam engines, they have been replaced by
better technology.

A lot of valuable material is still available on cassette only, so a cassette playback device should
be part of the language learner's toolbox.

Indeed. I used my own old cassette deck just a few weeks back when I digitised some old cassettes I had bought
almost twenty years ago.

Cainntear, could you keep an eye out for the Linguaphone Persian course, when you next go to a used bookshop? I've called quite a few, but I never found a copy. The British Library has a copy, but I don't think they would lend it out, or allow me to scan it in the library. I'm fairly sure it's out of copyright, and it would make a nice intermediate course to put online. I could get friends to make new recordings.

Where did you come across this?

A few UK charities now run specialist bookshops in major towns and cities, and one of my local ones has a good stock of language books.

Would you mind divulging which charities and towns/cities you are referring to? That way I can keep an eye out next time I'm in the UK. Thanks.

Oxfam's the biggie, and you can even see some of their stock online, as well as
searching for where their physical shops are.
