TTMIK: 8단 제1회-제5회 Scorched Earth Reading: - Tahiti - Love Sick (8 new words/grammar forms) 실컷 = to one's heart's content, as much as one likes ("난 artist 실컷 널 연주해줄게 playboy") 삼키다 = to swallow ("달면 삼키고 쓰면 내 뱉고") ~(으)ㄹ 듯 말 듯 = give the impression that (but not do); barely do ("보일 듯 말 듯 (애태울 거야)") 애태우다 = to worry (about/over), fuss (about) ("보일 듯 말 듯 (애태울 거야)") 애가 타다 = to be anxious[worried], be agonized ("기다린 만큼 (애가 탈거야)") (This seems to be the passive form of the previous entry.) 피를 말리다 = to persecute, torment, agonize, torture ("매달리는 너 (피말리는 너)") 뜯어고치다 = to redo, remake; to renovate, remodel ("어떻게 뜯어고칠까 bad boy") (I know 뜯다 and 고치다 separately, but this compound verb was new to me.) 냅두다 = to leave sth/sb alone, let sth/sb remain (as is) ("꽤 비싼데 치료비는 됐고 / 여 자들 냅둬") (Contraction of 내버려두다 perhaps (which I've seen before)?) This is the highest number of new words and grammar forms I've gotten from a single song in a *long* time. I was also surprised at how the meaning of this song was almost the exact inverse of most songs titled "Love Sick". Rather than the singer being the one who is "love sick" for someone, the singer is the one making someone else feel that way and is teasing that person and stringing them along to teach them a lesson. I think that twist made me like the song even more than I did previously. TTMIK: 8단 제11회-제15회 Scorched Earth Reading: - Skarf - Luv Virus (no new words or grammar) At first I thought 서툴다 was new until I looked it up and discovered it is simply a slightly contracted form of 서투르다 (to be unskilled (at), poor (at)) which I already know. As for the song itself, I personally think this song (as well as the group in general) is very underrated. "Luv Virus" wasn't performed for very long at all when it was released, but still became one of my overall favorite K-pop songs even from that short exposure to it. Extensive Reading: - 와라!편의점 (read daily) - Twitter (a few visits each week) Active Practice: Posts on Twitter Comments: I didn't complete my monthly challenge for intensive reading a TTMIK 이야기 lesson (for the first time this year), though I did complete the other monthly tasks. Honestly, I've been considering dropping the 이야기 task anyway, though, since most of the time it simply bores me (even after dropping from SE reading to intensive reading). The other monthly SE reading task (song lyrics) is much more entertaining and seems somewhat more useful (partly as SE reading a song is a prerequisite for using that song in a monthly song memorization task). I've yet to find anything that really catches my attention enough to maintain the momentum I need to focus on this language and I've more-or-less gotten to a "meh...I don't really care" state with this language again. The only Spanish tasks I now do with any sort of regularity are reading webcomics in Spanish and even those are just bilingual reading as I read the English versions anyway (and I don't pay as much attention to the Spanish ones as I did previously). I'm not officially declaring it "dropped" quite yet, but I likely will very soon unless something changes. The most likely candidate is Japanese which has really started to catch my attention again (and may help the issue I'm having with Chinese characters not sticking in my brain well enough). I could also start in on a new language from my list of eventual target languages (like Russian or German), but reigniting Japanese seems much more likely at this point. On the flip side, I could just focus more thoroughly on Korean for a while and not add in another language quite yet. Why not try finding a hook for another language before diving into another language.

The draw toward Japanese is a bit different from that of Spanish, though. Japanese
already has a few hooks in me, to be honest, they just aren't nearly as deep nor as plenteous as those of Korean. Spanish lured me back because I felt "ready to try learning Spanish again"; Japanese is luring me back as I'm finding myself "interested in things that are in Japanese again". I think part of my problem with Japanese last time was that I was almost afraid to get hooked since I feared it would pull me away from Korean too much. For example, many of the same places I find Korean music shows have the various Japanese music shows as well, but I just kinda ignored them. Music was really my primary hook with Korean at the time and I was afraid that latching onto music in another language might loosen that hook too much. In fact, the only real Japanese songs I latched onto were Japanese releases from K-pop artists (mostly KARA) with the exception of "Beginner" by AKB48 (which is very addictive, unlike most of their other songs that don't seem to really appeal to me). Now that I have several other fairly deep Korean hooks, I'm not sure I would necessarily have that same resistance to new Japanese hooks, even those in the music world. I'm still not sure whether I'll make another attempt at Japanese in the near future or not (I'm sure I will at some point, regardless), but it does have a lot of items in its favor vs. other languages (including my current level of interest compared to other languages). You are right, though, that there is really no point in rushing into another language immediately. I also read up a bit on her and discovered why I haven't seen her much on Korean music shows. Apparently the vast majority of her library has consisted of Japanese releases, not Korean ones. (Perhaps there is a good reason to get hooked on Japanese music after all.) Extensive Reading: - 와라!편의점 (read daily) - Twitter (a few visits each week) Active Practice: Posts on Twitter Comments: I noted a few months ago that there were 601 of the comic 와라!편의점 showing at the time and, while I know I had seen it increasing prior to that, it still says 601 now, so it appears the series has ended. Thus at my current rate (one per day) I will complete the series after 5 more weeks of reading it. I had bookmarked a few other Korean webcomics previously but haven't been reading any, so I guess it is time to start looking through those (and Daum and Naver's comic libraries in general) to see if I can find something to replace it. I don't want to drop this entirely since it is the only thing I read in Korean every single day without fail. I first reviewed all the hiragana again and either relinked my old mnemonics or (for characters that never stuck well) made new ones. Afterward I unsuspended just the standard 46 hiragana from the deck and am introducing them at 5/day. Afterward I'll do the same with the base katakana, then feed in the dakuten/handakuten, then the combinations, then the obsolete ones (the deck I'm using is the downloadable deck named "Extended Kana" so there are 243 total kana in there once you count all the variants). Some of the ones that had trouble sticking last time are sticking far better this time due to changing over to more memorable mnemonics for those kana. Japanese update:
I'm still working through the Kana deck. All 46 base hiragana are finally in the review rotation and I've just unsuspended the 46 base katakana now and am feeding them in at 5/day. I haven't started any Japanese study beyond that quite yet though (nor am I in a big rush to do so). After getting all the Kana activated (including the variants), I may reintroduce my 日本語 deck which was filled with all Kana-based Japanese words and phrases (mostly from Pimsleur 1). I have also seemingly gotten myself completely addicted to AKBINGO! (a show featuring AKB48 and their sister groups (e.g., SKE48) that is part variety/game show and part promotion for AKB48 releases) as I decided to try an episode of it on Saturday and I've now watched 17 episodes in 4 days (and constantly find myself doing the "just one more episode" thing). Wherever I downloaded this previously only had the first 20 episodes (from late 2008 and early 2009), but apparently this show continued well beyond that and is still airing even now. The game/variety show parts of this show remind me somewhat of the game segments from Korean variety shows (like Xman or Running Man), but way more over-the-top. I may have to start looking around to see what other Japanese variety shows are out there. 1 person has voted this message useful |
