日本語 (2014年 11月 2日 - 2014年 11月 8日):

Current RTK Lite Status:
Lessons Done = 26 -> 29 (56)
Kanji Covered = 950 -> 1085 (2042)
Active SRS Cards = 581 -> 659 (1116)
(The values before the arrow are last week's values. The values in parentheses are the
totals for completing RTK1 / RTK Lite.)

Pimsleur: 34-37 (active), 38-40 (passive)

Extensive Reading:
- Twitter (a few visits each week)

Comments:
On Sunday, I went through lesson 27 which puts me past the halfway mark in RTK1.

These new Pimsleur lessons are more difficult mental work than 1-30 as it is new
material, where I'd been through 1-30 previously. As such, doing a new lesson each day
was starting to get a bit mentally taxing. So this week I repeated 34-35 then proceeded
on with 3 new lessons. I plan to repeat this pattern of 2 review and 3 new lessons per
week for now and see how it works. If it works well, it is still much faster than doing each
lesson 2-3 times like I was doing in the past for my first ever passes of Pimsleur Korean
and Pimsleur Japanese.

What I wrote above about Pimsleur was written earlier this week (as I create my weekly
update in a text document throughout the week then post it on Sunday). However later in
the week, I decided to change tack altogether. Part of the reason for my change is that
while Spanish and Korean rarely made a habit of introducing new words very late in a
lesson, Japanese 2 is becoming notorious for it. Between the fact that there isn't much
review time left in the lesson and the fact that my brain is half-fried by that point, those
words do not tend to stick well. So what I'm opting to do is something I had planned to
try next time I did a Pimsleur course, but did not remember to do so when starting on
Japanese again. I plan to go through the Pimsleur course passively then repeat the
course actively responding. This should make the active wave a bit less tiring as I've
already been exposed to these words previously. Also, I can go through the passive wave
faster than the active wave, so it shouldn't take me all that much longer either.

Comments:
I've changed the description of my Pimsleur pass from "passive" to the more accurate
"semi-active" as I'm answering some prompts but just listening to others. After getting
farther into this pass, I've come to the conclusion that if I do return for an "active" pass
it likely won't be immediately after this pass as I had originally planned. I'm going to
dive into other resources first.

Comments:
I'm going through RTK a bit slower now and this is partly due to adding Korean readings
here and there to characters I already know (and occasionally Japanese readings for
words I've seen a lot already). Many of those Korean and Japanese readings have much
stronger associations with the character than the often vague and frequently too similar
keywords that Heisig uses. At the very least it clarifies which shade of meaning is
implied by the keyword.

Late this week or early next week, I should finally hit the point where I have more RTK
cards active than I did Hanja cards in my old deck (831).

TAC2014 is winding to a close but my Korean sits mostly idle. I'm still consuming media
in Korean, I'm just not doing anything that progress toward my TAC goals lately.

Comments:
Partly due to Thanksgiving's presence midweek, I opted to take a break from Pimsleur
this week (after having just completed level 2). However, I either need to buy and
download Pimsleur Japanese 3 today (the final set for Japanese) and/or commit to
starting on another resource so I get back to active study again. I've got three Japanese
textbooks but haven't actually started any of them yet. One of them is even Kana only
(Japanese for Busy People: Kana Edition), so I don't even have the "I'm doing RTK first"
excuse for not having started that one yet.

The more I study Japanese, the more I'm noticing some interesting differences from
Korean that I didn't expect, especially compared to how similar their grammars seemed
at the start. For example, many of the Japanese particles have near direct mappings to
Korean particles, however the に (ni) ending is used for a rather large number of
separate meanings (mapping to multiple particles in Korean). で (de) also seems to map
to multiple Korean particles, but not quite as many as に does. In other words,
Japanese seems to use fewer actual endings to cover all the same functions as Korean.

I'm also noticing that the の (no) possessive marker is used much more often than
Korean's 의 (ui) possessive marker. In fact, its behavior reminds me more of how "de" is
used in Spanish than anything that Korean or English does with possessives. Most of
the times where I've seen several の endings connecting chains of nouns were places
where Spanish would be using "de" for those same connections (albeit with a different
word order). Even the words for boy and girl have a の stuck right in the middle (男の子
and 女の子). If you remove the の from those words and read the Chinese characters in
Korean they become the familiar 남자 and 여자 (man/boy and woman/girl).

While I still believe in my reasons for suspending 1 year old vocabulary cards, I've just
suspended 16 more cards (from Nov 2013) and am now down to 95 total active cards in
that deck (many of which are grammar cards as I don't suspend those) out of 4558 total!
The newest cards in the deck are from June 2014, so unless I start adding more cards
again I have about 7 months until nothing but grammar cards remain in my Korean deck.
I'm almost tempted to go download a large pre-made deck and start working through it
just to jumpstart my vocab learning again. I did document several new words while SE
reading song lyrics this year, but few of them made it into the SRS. That said, upon
browsing through my word queue file, I still remember the meanings of well over half of
them anyway, so perhaps I don't need to review them after all. Of course, upon closer
inspection the ones I recall the most are the ones in songs that I went on to memorize
so I'm seeing them repeatedly in my Lyrics deck. (For reference, my Lyrics deck does not
have definitions; it is merely a cloze deletion deck for recalling lines from a song. Thus
I'm not seeing the definitions for these newly learned words, but am still interacting with
them regularly.)

I just now completed chapter 37 of RTK (and unsuspended the related RTK Lite Kanji), which
means I now have more active SRS Kanji cards (838) than I had Hanja cards previously
(831). It took about 4 years to get that count of Hanja cards, but those Kanji cards have all
been introduced over the course of 12 weeks. My reviews aren't all that bad either because
my recall is higher and I'm also a bit more lenient in my grading methods for reviews at the
moment which allows them to space out some and not overwhelm me like the Hanja deck
was doing.

I'm officially starting the final week of my TAC challenge today (week 52). Technically that
is only for the "weekly" goals and the "monthly" goals will continue until December 31st,
since I started my weekly goals in mid-December last year but did not start the monthly
ones until January 1st, but my progress on TAC goals has pretty much stalled anyway.
When paired with the multiple projects I'm juggling at work right now, I don't expect that
to change before the end of the year.

My AKBINGO! watching has dipped a surprising amount lately as I've been watching a lot
of "Gaki no Tsukai" (a comedy/variety show) instead.
