I can't speak for Ziad Fazah, but concerning accents, I've found myself occasionally second-guessing myself when I've heard people speak in English. I can't tell a New Zealand accent, for example, and sometimes I'm not sure if I heard an accent from Australia or some place in Great Britain.

1 - I have an authentic Gaucho type accent with perfecr slang from Rio. 9 times out of 10 I get into a taxi and the driver will think I am from the south of Brazil. The only time I am "seen" as a foreigner" is in the occasional grammatical mistake I make in verb time, po and para and and a few other minor details. I have never taken a Portiguese class, I have a natural gift. My accent is also liliting and resembles what a southerner would say and EVERYONE mitsakes me for a a Gaucho. A portuguese if I am xtremely tired and I swallow my words a bit like someone from Portugal, then other people from Portugal ask me if I'm from Lisboa and how long Ive been in Rio E eu não sou muito de soletrar ou digitar corretamente mas vai tomar no sabe que para ficar aqui e me julgando, escrevendo eu sou quase analfabeto, falando eu mando second - Ziad is not a computer genius. No one said he is. He likes Linux, plays with a few programs and has some skills but nothing resembling a computer genius. I have a lesson tomorrow and I am hoping to get the layout done and up by this weekend, especially since we found out Go Dady is only 70$ a year for hosting 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

(end quote) Nobody who had actually heard both accents would ever confuse Portuguese from Portugal with Gaúcho-Portuguese. That's what I was asking: did Mr. Fazah actually ever hear the languages he knows spoken by natives, or did he learn most of them out of books? Which is perfectly true, as long as said Italian is only 6 years old. ;o) End translation) EDIT - Btw, "besteirol" is very impolite when used with Portuguese-from-Portugal speakers from certain regions. A "besteirol" is a place where "bestas" are kept. "Bestas" (beasts) is taken to mean donkeys, mules, oxen. When you call a group of people a "besteirol", you're saying they're all irrational, unclean animals. Not terribly nice. You insulted me, I wasn't trying to be nice. I think you seem to be a bit of a snob. If some dumb hick who never went to high school spoke English as his mother tongue but couldn't read or write you wqouldn't consider him an English speaker
If I quoted Ziad as a computer genius, I was wrong. Over the last few months I've gotten to know him more personally, he is a language genius, but as for computers just normal. And it is very easy to confuse a gaucho with a portuguese for the reason that a speaker from one region of the country may recognize that the speaker he is hearing sounds like a native speaker but he is not sure from where. I also stated that when I am exhausted I swallow my words a bit and my accfent becomes a little Portuguesized. All in all based on the hundreds of people who have mistaken me for a native speaker of Portuguese I will consider you're statements for what they are - unimportant 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Dave M - what tips do you have for becoming a better listener? I find I can sometimes/often get my thoughts across in, French, but I have trouble understanding what's said back to me. I've been listening to the radio a lot, but I was wondering if you had any more suggestions.

Speaking and writing are two different skills. If you can speak a language then you can speak it, it doesn't mean you can write in it.
