I picked up a nice clean copy of this through an online bookseller. Does anyone know what the actual publication year was for a 1940 "2e"? Thanks!

Would you please share with us the price of the book and the URL of the bookseller. I've wanted to get my hands on FWT for quite some time now.

Have you looked in the back of the book - the final leaf of printed material should say when it was printed.

And there it is! 1963--thanks!
So much for my notion that I had an occupation-era artifact...

I have three copies of French Without Toil from 1957, 1959 and 1969.

The first two were illustrated by Pierre Soymier and the last by Soymier and Robert Gring. My wife and I took them with us to France to practise the language, much to the amusement of the children where we were staying.

Now other members of our family are learning French and using the course, along with the new With Ease and New French With Ease.

This is the first Assimil course I used. It was used as a textbook by the evening language school I attended before travelling to Europe. I have a sentimental attachment to it. It is still my favourite Assimil course.
