Here are 7 reasons why I think Americans are learning Spanish, region by region.
(not meant to offend anyone)

California-

You're a white liberal, hoping that by learning Spanish, you will never be called a racist.

Texas-

You're a rancher, thinking about hiring the illegals camped out on your property.

The Midwest-

You already think you're fluent because you know how to say "chulupa".

Florida-

You want to score with all those beautiful Latin babes in Miami nightclubs, unaware that half of them are transsexuals.

The South-

You are a missionary preparing to go to Brazil, not realizing that Brazil is not a Spanish-speaking country.

New York-

You have a neurotic obsession with Pablo Picasso and/or Salvador Dali, and want to study art in Spain.

The Northeast-

Your English teacher called you the next Hemingway, and you want to be ready for the next Spanish Civil War.

How about Hawaii? Please be all-inclusive in your stereotypes.

Sadly, I think there are people who fit these stereotypes. I also think those same people would never make a real achievement in the language.

Such stereotypes wouldn't exist if it weren't for them. It's good for some laughs ;)

Hmmm, how about this one:

8) You are intellectually curious and want to be able to appreciate and understand the culture and the people of a large part of your own hemisphere.

Not sure what the punchline to this one is. "Beautiful trans women exist! Ha...ha?"

Yes exactly, No one would actually learn a language completely for the above named
reasons. If you want to learn a language to an advanced level then number 8 is the only
reason.

Here's another one:
You have a language requirement to fulfill, and you heard that Spanish was easy.
