Since you've already been given examples of errors and some sensible reflections on how variable their gravity can be, I'd advice you to go through Barry Farber's crash course on grammar (a section of his famous book 'How to learn any language, etc.) and then try to see if you understand better why things that feel 'wrong' do so.
Remember: grammar is important because it explains and lets you see why and how (almost) everything falls into place. Otherwise, you'll probably waste huge amounts of time trying to work out the rules on your own.
