There is a very large Christian group which does this; they hire linguists (with strong Christian faith) who go to the most remote places and learn obscure languages.

While living with these indigenous people they translate the gospel message and the Bible if appropopriate and distribute it to all the speakers when it is finished (obviously a big translation job...)

As a bi-product of the evangelisation work they also produce dictionaries etc, and share their information with academic institutions.

This is probably more missionary work than a normal career.
But it includes pretty much everything you say you are interested in...

I've forgotten what this organisation is called, but I remember that it is based in the US. I came across it when reading a Christian magazine.

It's actually SIL: The Summer Institute of Languages, which is unfortunate because
they're the same group that manages the Ethnologue. I say it's unfortunate because
their motivation is to spread the Gospel, not to preserve all of these beautiful
languages (although they do a great job with the Ethnologue).

I'm also fairly certain that these linguists who help write dictionaries and language
acquisition tools for minority languages are largely funded by governments. For
instance, the Government of Canada, dept of Native Affairs, and the ministry of
Culture fund these activities for the languages of the First Nations. It would be in the
best interests of other governments to do the same.
