I thought of doing this on Twitter, but I suppose it'll be easier to compile a list here:) As it's already been pointed out, twitter is great for language practice because tweets are short!
For now, these are mostly the accounts I myself follow - additions are very welcome! Frankly speaking, I'd rather include only the accounts in the language, rather than the various "word of the day" ones or similar. Fun stuff rather than accounts you can easily find by searching for the language name. Just a few of my favorites in Portuguese:
I have way too many accounts to list @englishexperts An English-learners blog for Brazilians. Portuguese learners can reverse engineer the tips. The podcasts are almost all in Portuguese with some English bits thrown in, like talking about "phrasl verbs" for example. This is excellent for learners of Portuguese. @cronicadodia Crônica do Dia has a wealth of topical, very short, crônicas for free on their site and the twitter account lets you know when the new ones are available. @observalp from Portugal, the Observatório de Língua Portuguesa. @Rosie Alves She's my favorite Angolan blogger. @verdademz A Verdade- The free Mozambique newspaper. @publico Newspaper from Lisbon, Portugal @lucianopires The podcaster Luciano Pires from Brazil @gvlusofonia Global Voices Portuguese, intersting articles about topical subjects from all over the Lusophone world and beyond. The articles are often translated into English and Spanish. @FernandoPessoa Yes, that's right, Fernando Pessoa- possibly the greatest poet of the Lusophone world. Obviously not him, but I love the quotes, even if he's not the one tweeting them from the afterlife. (I love Carlos Drummond Andrade too). Falando dele: Speaking of him: @carlosdrummonde Possibly Brazil's greatest poet. He isn't tweeting from beyond either but his poetry lives forever and still speaks to us. Sports stuff:
Opta (English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Russian, Arabic, Dutch) - scroll to the bottom of the page to get "view" links rather than "follow" links. Tweets about the respective countries' football in the local language and English. Also some other sports in English and Spanish. SpheraSports - tweets in Spanish. Football but also other sports, EPL/La Liga/Serie A but also the lesser known leagues (like even Russian football etc). See especially cuentas temáticas. I use Twitter in spurts so I'm not the most expert user. But one helpful tip is to change your location to get the trending hashtags for the area you're interested in. Here are a couple screen shots showing where you do that:
Also, I've made my language lists public and have started cleaning them up. twitter.com/daysofdeutsch deserves an exception (and it doesn't seem to be easily findable on twitter). Beautiful artsy photos with the handwritten word of the day. Also available on instagram and tumblr. I don't really need it at my level but it's too much fun. (And I look up the Scandinavian equivalents sometimes) also, I follow very few accounts in Russian, but my current fave is FC Yenisey. Here's a good account for people fairly confident in their Russian who might be interested in some vulgar (in various senses) Russian poetry - https://twitter.com/guberman_igor. Igor Guberman's satirical quatrains seem to have been designed for Twitter. A bit demanding in terms of cultural knowledge, but often both entertaining and thought-provoking.
Next, an account predominately dealing with Japanese language and (pop-)culture, but also one of the most multilingual accounts I follow. Take the offspring of a world-famous shoe designer. Add a multicultural upbringing, Japanophilia and geeky hobbies, with a special focus on dolls. Subtract any and all sense of shame and self-consciousness. Thus you get Danny Choo, Chinese-Malaysian-British entrepreneur and media personality in Japan, promoting otaku culture and his products in Japanese, English/Singlish/Manglish, at least two varieties of Chinese, Malay/Indonesian, Korean, and in whichever language he happens to find an article about his activities (I seem to recall at least one in Russian). If you aren't creeped out by hardcore otakudom, are interested in two or more of the aforementioned languages and don't get second-hand embarrassment easily, then he's worth a follow. And now here's a selection of accounts that might interest someone familiar with both Japanese and Russian. Probably not the most common combination, but just in case: https://twitter.com/B_Reibun An account aimed at Japanese learners of Russian, posting several Russian sentences per day, accompanied by Japanese translations. They can be quotes from fiction, comments on the news of the day or just random thoughts from the account's owner. The Russian tends to be pretty good, but not without occasional slip-ups. https://twitter.com/Uesakasumire Sumire Uesaka, an up-and-coming anime voice actress and pop singer, an enthusiast of Lolita fashion and military history who also happens to be a major Russophile. Having studied the Russian language and history at college, she often shares her love and knowledge of all things Russian with her fans. Tweets predominately in Japanese. https://twitter.com/jenya_jp Jenya Davidyuk, a Russian whose love of anime led her to become a professional voice actress in Japan, writing about her daily life and struggles as a foreigner in a very linguistically demanding industry. Tweets predominately in Japanese. https://twitter.com/satoshi551 Anatoly Mikhakhanov, a.k.a. Ōrora Satoshi, the first professional sumo wrestler from Russia. Likes to tweet information about Japanese culture and humorous images. Tweets predominately in Russian. https://twitter.com/japanreports Just a Russian guy who's been living in Japan for years and tweets various curious (from a Russian perspective) observations about life in Japan. Can be a bit of a dick to people asking him what he perceives as stupid questions. Tweets predominately in Russian. https://twitter.com/usausa_sekine Kazuhiro Sekine, Asahi Newspaper's former Moscow correspondent who has written a lot of informative articles from all over the former USSR. Unfortunately, he got moved to the Hokkaido bureau this April, so his Russia-related output has decreased, but he does occasionally write interesting articles about the Kuril Island dispute.
