Argh, yes, exactly! I've put Russian and Korean down on my 'maybe' list for the year,

Damn you read my mind! I've been looking at Russian myself today...And ended up putting
more things in my Amazon basket which I clicked to buy by "accident" lol. Oh well...I
think I now have enough books/audio for all the languages I'd ever want to learn!
Although I'm not sure when I'll dabble in the Cantonese/Russian books I've bought as I
want to focus the majority of my energy on Mandarin.
Also, out of curiosity what are your reasons for Icelandic?

Haha, got to watch out for that on amazon, definitely! I have so many things on my
wishlist, but they're going to have to wait until after December now ;).
Hmm, I'm not so sure about why I want to learn Icelandic. I think I saw a word
somewhere on the forums the other day and it just looked so foreign... All those
vowels! :D (Plus it's supposed to be really hard, and I'm not one to turn down a
challenge.)

I've never done too well with Mandarin in high school but I also could see how
different my work ethic was.
My parents spoke to me in Cantonese but I could always answer back in English, hence I

I think that's why them implement the wishlist - it creates so much temptation!
That's what I was thinking about Icelandic when you listed it - I've heard is very
hard, however I guess hard is subjective for some ;).
I'm generally one for choosing languages that I can use with people I know though as I
know lots of Chinese/Scandinavian friends, but the large amount of talk of Russian in
the threads recently made me look into it - and damn I like Russian music so much at
the moment, so I think that language is definitely on the hit list for me!

Yeah Jimmy, if you decide to study some Cantonese we could definitely help each other out!
I usually choose languages by the sound of them, which is kind of dangerous since it's difficult to avoid good-sounding languages. There are so many of them!
It will be interesting to see everone's progress in all these languages :)

That's why I'm so interested in Korean... I watched a K-drama aaaaaages ago and just
fell
in love with the way Korean sounded - it was a bit like Mandarin/Japanese, but with a
mix
of something else too~ Plus, the alphabet is cool as anything :)

there are a lot of Polish speakers where I live and because I have a part-time job in a
store, I thought it would be useful... but Russian has always been the language I
wanted to learn :) Maaaaaaan, I'm never going to get around to all these, lol!

I watched the video, and that's exactly what I mean! :D It sounds so cool and
different; though the middle judge at the end sounded a little like she was speaking
Japanese at the end (I think it was the rhythm or something; it reminded me of anime,
lol). I like all the consonant sounds, makes it a bit different.
Hmm yeah, I think that might be why I've never made any real effort towards it. Still,
if I (ever) learn Russian, Polish might be tackled after that. Maybe. Gah, I need to
remember to focus on the languages at hand!

Heh, yeah I could paste some Cantonese here and there. I'm familiar with the phonetics and tones but not explicitly
- I guess with this it'll help me learn to explain them better. Same with Mandarin, that blasted "r" sound took me a
while to master, I think it's very much like the "r" in an American or British accent except rather than going through
the movements you say something like "grrrrr" and then isolate the "rrr" noise and start from there. Like Tony the
Tiger in those Frosted Flakes commercials.
I find that I have an affinity for phonetics and pronunciation but when it comes to grammar or vocabulary, that is
where it starts to intimidate me.

I definitely know what you mean about the "r" sound - it took me quite some time to
master that myself, even with the help of a native speaker!
