Just to nitpick, Chung, English also retains the genitive — and for all
nouns, not just pronouns. :) Macedonian sounds like fun; one of those languages like Icelandic that a language enthusiast might want to learn because it's useful but few people know it. Plus, it looks like you get Bulgarian for 75% off with your purchase of Macedonian. :) Amazon turns up a handful of books for Macedonian, but the pickings are a little slim. I'm sure there's enough, though, to master the basics before immersing yourself in the country itself. Since you appear to know some French, you might also be able to make use of "Grammaire pratique du macédonien", which I just found at Amazon.fr. I learned from old threads here that Macedonian is just another standard for the Bulgarian language (Ardamschair dixit). If that is true, maybe materials for Bulgarian could be used just as well, and then learn what the non-structural differences are.
Another interesting comparison would be with the other arguable pseudodifferent Croatian and Serbian, leading to the more general topic of whether political factors can really split a language into two in a short time or not, not to mention the headaching language/dialect debate. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

You could be right, Sigiloso, they're closer than I realized. I found a few links
which claim Macedonian is just Bulgarian but with a Cyrillic alphabet closer to Serbian (while the Bulgarian alphabet is more like that of Russian). http://www.macedoniainfo.com/books/kronsteiner/ik_3_eng.html http://www.ucc.ie/staff/jprodr/macedonia/macmodlan.html However, it's a source of national pride for Macedonians to claim their language as separate. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Does Macedonian in Republic of Macedonia have same language with Macedonian in Greece's Macedonia?

I believe Greek Macedonians (I'm saying this assuming there is actually still a province in Greece called "Macedonia") speak Greek. There was a conflict over the name Macedonia in which Greece didn't want that nation (the Republic of Macedonia) to name itself "Macedonia" because of Greek cultural heritage or something like that, but the linguistic lines are pretty clear-cut to my knowledge. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

I am a Greek living in the greek province of Macedonia.
I do not want to comment on any of the points about the country that we greeks keep on calling FYROM (Former Yugoslavian Republic Of Macedonia) I just want to bring to your attention that you are talking about a subject that has created a lot of "forum wars". I do not want to see it happening in this site. If anybody is interested in the subject there are a lot of places for that in the internet. I have tried to form this post as mildly as i can. 2 persons have voted this message useful |
