@Teango: Yeah it's great! :) And now I also just realized that many visual novels actually come with Full Voice Acting!! Sometimes it's even synchronized with the text. :O This is beyond awesome!

(Last time I checked, "Full Voice Acting" was virtually a synonym to "Unlimited Happiness")   :D

Brother M-San!

It's that TAC time of year again, and armies of hopeful language learners are quickly forming on the horizon, readying themselves for glorious battle in the otherwise peaceful verdant valleys below. Team Mir is already donning its battle-armour and filling the air with rallying war cries that echo across the rolling landscape. However something is missing...something important...or moreover, someone essential! Where is the venerable Sai-Lon Tsu??

So come join us in Team Mir, brah; otherwise, I'll just have to climb up that mountain and get you! ;) With all this abounding space technology, we need your spiritual wisdom and creative inspiration to make this team whole. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that my comrade-in-arms through 3 TAC challenges will join up soon.

Brother T-Bag! Your way of writing is so freaking inspiring - it reminds me of how much I love learning languages! :)

I have to admit..I took a deep look into myself in the mirror today and realized that I am probably not a true cosmonaut.. Do I really have the persona to pass through the rigorous Mir training programme and become part of the proud and explorative Space Science Crew??

I realized that I feel more like a Cyborg Galaxy Knight, set out on a mission to escort the beautiful Moon Princess Aurora to the Great King planet at the end of the universe so that she can restore the fading Galaxy Energy that has turned so many peaceful beings into violent monsters:

But, on my dangerious mission, I do need a home base close to earth. For when the obstacles become overwhelming I will need to jump into my lightning fast spaceship and return home to ask the brilliant earth scientists for help. Maybe Mir can become my home station, and I can become a Mir team member even though I'm not a true citizen of our любимый Союз?

What do you think, my товарищ по оружию? (comrade-in-arms)

(btw, the picture is from the greatest anime show ever, and it was made in the 70's - Starzinger!) :) :)

Oh how the childhood memories of Gatchaman come flooding back now! (incidentally, I tried to sound out the katakana in your picture above, but couldn't quite work it out yet)

I think you'd make an excellent addition to the Russian team again of course, and it goes without saying that we're always in need of more cyborg knights to add to our galactic defences. ;) Just sign up on the "TAC 2013 Organization and Sign-up" thread if you'd like to join us, then come and visit our newly refurbished spacepad.

I'll also be dabbling in a bit of Japanese in 2013 too (so don't worry about having more than one study language), although for me this is more out of necessity than anything else, so that at least I can communicate with taxi drivers and shop attendants at a survival level in future. I'm living in a bizarre American reflection of Nihon Holiday Town at the moment, and can't wait to unrust the few words I know and open my little Pandora's box of kanji, and finally get back into this other great language after all these years.

@Teango: Thanks for the link, Teango, and looking forward to joining you again in the
team next year!

@M.Medialis: Visual novels ARE great. They're LR's haven for current spoken speech, and
they're almost a cross between anime and manga. I agree though, adult themes are super-
uncomfortable to watch, and I want to have fun with the language outside of that, so it
does need some hunting. But I'm finding plenty of "safe" material to use, and I'll
definitely keep you updated if I get access to any great ones. Good job there, and do
hope you jump aboard space shuttle MIR!!!

@Teango: Woow! Or to say like the koreans: "HUUUUOOOOAAAAHHHHH!!!!!!" :) -You seem to accidentally have stepped into a Real Japanese immersion environment. :D The closest I've come to real Japanese outside my internet is still from stalking Japanese people at airports and the Kuala Lumpur airport's subway that for some strange reason makes the automatic announcements in both English and Japanese. o_O

About the katakana in the picture - It's a fun story behind it. :) The names of the 3 Galaxy Knights are: "Jan Kugo", "Don Hakka" and "Sir Djorgo", so at a point in the intro video they just sing their first names: "Jan, Don, Sir! Jan, Don, Sir!". But since it's Japanese it becomes: "ジャン ・ ドン ・ サー  ジャン ・ ドン ・ サー", or: "Jyan, Don, Saa! Jyan, Don, Saa!"   :D :D

@Woodsei: Yeah! :) I'm becoming more and more convinced that Visual Novels will be my 2013 Secret Japanese Power Weapon of Greatness! I just find it so incredibly satisfying to just sit back, look at the current screen and take as much time as I want in looking up interesting words, writing down short phrases and figuring out the nuances of the sentence. In most other media, I always have this drive to move forward faster, but here I don't feel that urge. It's perfect that we can keep each other updated when we find cool Visual Novel-gems! :)

You have won me over to the Mir team now! I will contact your руководитель (captain) so that we can settle Space Station MIR to be the home base for my 2013 space adventures!

Thats's wonderful news! I'm so relieved that you're safely attached to Mir. We don't want you lost in space.

Team Tac 2012 - Team Sputnik - Log #10

Time to briefly sum up 2012!

Japanese

I have made nice progress in Japanese - and come to a stage where the language makes sense, I can listen to podcasts, while looking up words on the fly and actually understand what they're talking about. I can also play Japanese adventure games (Visual Novels) and understand most of the dialogues with the help of a dictionary.

The point here is that the Japanese language has become so comfortable to me that it's actually fun to read and look up words (and write them down) and figure out the meaning of sentences. Two years ago, such an approach would have been completely exhausting - now it's quite relaxing.

Now, my vocabulary is still not large enough, so I still have a long way to go before I can enter into any sort of basic reading/listening fluency. Let's see what will happen next year! :)

Non-TAC stuff

So what have I been spending my time doing this year? I've had loads of fun following all the colorful personalities who ran for the US precidency. I'm not that fond of politics but I like elections. :) I have also been writing a lot in English, both technical stuff for my thesis and personal messages, so 2012 has definitely leveled up my English skills in most aspects.

The rest of the time has been spent composing at the piano. I've had a more than fantastic year in this aspect - probably my best piano year ever! :)

My last words

So this Team TAC 2012 is about to end - and I have to confess that most of my language learning plans turned out to become a major flop. But let's forget about that and initiate a glorious comeback for the 2013 TAC!
