Hi everyone. This is my first year participating in the TAC challenge. The languages that I want to study this year are German, Mandarin, and Spanish.
German
I have very limited knowledge of Deutsch, and I'm a complete beginner. By the end of 2012 I would like to be able to read some newspaper articles and be able to speak the language, too.
Mandarin
I have never learned or studied Mandarin, but I would like to be able to read a few hundred characters and be able to carry on conversations.
Spanish
I majored in Spanish in college, but I cannot speak the language well. I would like to be able to read books and newspapers without using a dictionary very much. I also want to be able to listen to music, radio, and TV without having to concentrate so hard.

I have gotten off to a slow start, but hopefully next week I will do more.
German
This week I read part of lesson 1 in a book that I have. I learned a few words and made some flashcards on an app that I have on my phone.
Mandarin
I'm still trying to figure out what materials to use, but I listened to three lessons in an app that I have on my phone.
Spanish
I read a couple of articles on the El Pais website. I also watched a few minutes of TV in Spanish.

I've decided to switch from Spanish to French, but I will probably keep trying to read more articles online in Spanish. I also have a novel that has been translated into Spanish.
This week I reviewed chapter one of a French textbook that I have.

Which book are you using for German?
I have been using Assimil, (and slowly, at that!), but it might be wise to have something that explains grammar a little more, too. =)

I'm using Berlitz's Essential German. This week I read back over part of the section of Chapter 2.
