I wonder if Frank Turner is motivated to speak Dutch because of his friendships with Dutch people. (He mentioned in the video that at least a couple friends had helped translate.) If so, that's pretty awesome! That's how things should be. :-) 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

That sort of stuff goes down a treat with the audience. I think that's the reason -
Frank Turner has his e-mail address publically stated on his website and spends a lot of time answering fanmail, personally interacting with his audience. If things add to the fan- band interaction (which is a common thing in punk/rock/metal music, there's a very DIY attitude) then he will put in the effort to do it. But he has also done it for French (which is a language he learned, but has somewhat forgotten I think). He actually went to Eton (where he was in the same year as Prince William), but he dropped out. He also did LSE where he read history. Maybe it's because he's also fairly cultured and thinks this sort of thing is important to do. When I saw him, he also said thanks in Dutch after songs. He seems like a really nice dude. I do hope that more musicians follow his lead.
Small side note - after reading your original post about Frank Turner, my mind immediately jumped to "Door Jou" by Jim Bakkum, which is a Dutch translation/revamp of a Spanish song called "Azul". Buut after your last post, I see the situations are obviously quite different. I mean, number one, Jim Bakkum is Dutch, so it's not as surprising that he would translate a song into that language. But more importantly, Frank Turner's translation does seem like it's coming from a place of culture or is a gesture toward world citizenship or something, whereas Jim Bakkum's pop music basically rides on the fact that he is sort of like a Dutch Ashton Kutcher who sings. I don't know. The contrast made me smile. In any case, I enjoy lyric translations into Dutch. :-P 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Hahaha Jim Bakkum. I remember the days he was on our version of Idols. Man that is long
ago. He lost, too, came in second... I wonder whatever happened to that singer that won first place, he did a single but he never catapulted after that (I also remember he was gay). He was called Jamai I think? Jim Bakkum has been in a lot of places but all the stuff he frequents is the type of Dutch pop culture I try my best to avoid like the plague. I haven't met Frank Turner personally but he does give off a vibe that I personally like. However I've seen tons of punk and metal shows and doing the Dutch greeting thing only happens for a couple of bands. Some people do it because they're cool (like Frank), and some actually have a connection to the country. For example, there's a prog rock/folk band from England called Mostly Autumn that do a yearly Christmas gig in the town where I went to high school, and there's a band from Liverpool called Anathema who have a band member who lives in the Netherlands and speaks fluent Dutch. I also remember I went to a show once on Sinterklaas Eve, it was some emo/punk/rock whatever gig and the singer had one of those cone bags with kruidnoten which he threw into the audience... I think we've had some adaptations of foreign songs into Dutch, but not many. We're not that popular. And the downside to us is that we're probably the foreign nation most likely to understand English, aside from the Scandies. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

And I think that is really key! Given how little English the average Italian speaks, in concerts held here it’s become really common for international acts to greet and thank the public in Italian. But such interaction with the audience sounds so forced that to my ears it’s not charming but fake. And the fact that the snippet where the artist mumbles something in Italian is usually the only one chosen to be shown in the news whenever such concerts are covered by the media only compounds to my annoyance. But I’ve watched the video you linked and I understand why you say Frank Turner gives off a vibe you like. He looks like someone who’s genuinely enjoying his rapport with the public and he is truly having fun performing his song even in a language not his own. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Hahaha yeah I know. For a second I was like, "Totally, I too am above that kind of pop culture", but then I suddenly remembered that the new "international" season of Boer Zoekt Vrouw just came out this month and internally freaked. Soo obviously I am not. Back on the topic of song lyric translations though - I have translated songs into Dutch myself for kicks, but I'm sure my translations are quite awkward-sounding so I haven't posted any.
