I think she takes classes besides me at an English school for that, and her teachers advised her to speak more English - and that's where I come in, because I am not a professional teacher. What I've been doing is working with simple texts from real life, outside textbooks, and get her to speak on those topics, trying to get her to say sentences on this, helping her with the pronunciation and so on. The problem is that I can't say a lot without her looking like she's lost the plot, so often I have to say something first in English, then translate it into Russian afterwards so she knows exactly what I said (and I always repeat my phrases a few times). I give grammatical examples (when they occur in the text) in English and often explain something in Russian besides that (which is also why she turned to me in the first place - because I have posted that I have some Russian on my profile and I am capable of aiding in this regard, although they should probably not let me go into the details once she gets better - but that is when I would start speaking 100% English anyways). This morning started well but went downhill during the day. I know the end is near but I

I'm making the same experience with Japanese. I think the problem is that the vocabulary is in no way related to IE vocabulary (except English loanwords, of course). Plus, Japanese syllable structure makes everything sound the same. There are no "catchy" consonant clusters like in Russian or German. I imagine the situation in Korean might be similar. Other than that, hang in there! I can't find much time for my languages either, although I'd really like to work on my Gaelic right now. Ain't no exam but a presentation (and I've already passed basically, I can only fail if
my presentation is horrible and I mess everything up - but that won't really happen.) Yesterday was just one of those hateful "nothing is going my way days". I don't know, some vocabulary is sticking (mostly stuff that gets repeated a lot), but not enough - I think it's to do with not reading enough. I've decided that Korean lessons are every week so I'm going to be doing Korean 1 hour per week (tutoring online) via Italki. French is 1h every 2 weeks, and I also have some Romanian plans but how often I don't yet know, probably also once every 2 weeks. They don't let you present if your work isn't good enough to pass anyways. It's pretty
much "formalities" at this point, but you can't have a terrible presentation of course. But I've already put it together, I just need a bunch of trial runs over the weekend and then Monday I'll do the presentation, get my final grades, chalk up another notch in the achievement list and forget about university forever :) Edited by tarvos on 15 November 2013 at 10:46pm 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

That is that part of life done and over with. I still have some things to do (make a
poster, attend the ceremony) but within 2 weeks I will officially be MSc (and I already have completed all of my grades and subjects). I am now an alumnus. Back to more languages it is! The end of this year will see a nice spurt. I am hurtling ahead in Korean well with my structures, but speech is something I still need to work on. I will also practice some German in December because I am travelling to Munich, and French and Romanian will get a look-in. I am planning to stop French in the new year for the time being.
