The Trial Zone
This is how I use tutoring. It is, to me, something I like to call the Trial Zone. Here's why I call it the Trial Zone; you are paying a personal coach to help you get better at a certain skill (here, speaking a foreign language). They are thus rendering you a service. This means that the tutoring area is the practice room where you can make every single possible mistake and get it corrected; that's the tutor's job. Results aren't required in tutoring sessions - they're mandated by the circumstances that your life is in. I can give you a very concrete example. Let's say I need to go shopping for a mobile phone in China. I need a simlock free mobile phone, so I can transfer my old phone number and contacts. I have a certain phone budget (say, 1500 kuai) and I am looking for a specific brand. In this case, if I know nothing about mobile phone terminology and shopping, I can enlist a tutor for a 30 minute session (this should be enough, given that we're not debating philosophy or exam practice), present my ideas for what I need to know (sim card, lock sim card, budget, prices above 1000 kuai, names of phone brands in China, names of mobile telecom providers etc.), and work out a dialogue/do a roleplay which prepares me to have this conversation. (I have actually done such conversations for shopping, just not for phones, in my actual lessons). What does this do? It solves my vocabulary problem, it allows me to practice common structures when purchasing items, and it helps me to describe my daily activities when someone asks me where I bought that shiny new phone I'm holding. This way, I have particularly practised a situation (and ironed out mistakes with vocabulary and tones), before I went to the store. You can make this more general if your level is lower (just learn and practise phrases like "how much does this cost" and "anything else?"), or you can make it more specific if you're handling business enquiries about new computers. Whichever suits your taste. The tutoring zone is the area in which you can make all of these mistakes before you ever set foot in a real shop! It will make your interaction that much faster when your phone breaks and you actually have to buy that new phone. Note that I equally see the Trial Zone as a place to practice grammar structures you're unclear on, get help with pronunciation (although 99/100 tutors suck at this), and so on and so forth. Use a tutor targeting your particular weaknesses. You can learn the phrases at home from the comfort of your phrasebook with Anki and Memrise and wordlists and all that other good stuff. The tutoring room is where you try out their use with an actual human being that is a (near-)native speaker of that language. 8 persons have voted this message useful | |||

I spoke Italian again for an hour today, and had to resort to English only twice (and
a few times to Spanish) to get my words across. I have noticed that I can produce reasonably grammatical phrases in Italian (if you count the absence of correct conjugational forms when I don't know these) and that my pronunciation is also very accurate (although I do like using /z/ for intervocalic s, not /s/). However the use of distinctly Romanian or Latin influences is very clear and when I don't know a word (or if I don't know how to Italianize it properly) I will resort to simply saying the Romanian word for it - and sometimes even when I do know it, to strange results. For example more in Italian is "più", but I have a tendency to want to say "mai" instead in this position (because "more" in comparatives in Romanian is always expressed using this in Romanian, even in cases where Italian doesn't use a compound construction such as buono/migliore/il migliore). In Italian, "mai" of course means never. But I was saying "mai interessante" or "mai divertente" when what I really meant was "più divertente". I self-corrected this, but it's notable that Romanian is the language influencing my Italian. I also didn't know the words for "here" and "there", so I substituted Romanian aici and acolo (they are qui and li, I know that now). And once I said "exprimare", which seems to me to be Latin, not Italian. Another language that is latent in my brain because I studied Latin quite extensively during my high school days. I improvised some poetry on the spot today, and because I am nice I will provide a
reasonably free translation of my short poem. I set myself the task of improvising it without prior preparation - I only corrected one or two grammatical things afterwards, but they don't interrupt the flow. Here's the poem, entitled Ветеран ("Veteran") in Russian: Дайте мне ваши крылья Я хочу летать по всему миру. А если у вас крыльев нет, дайте мне вашу машину: я хочу ездить по всему миру. А если у вас нет машины, Дайте мне ваши ноги - я хочу ходить по всему миру - Потому что у меня ног нет. "Give me your wings, For I want to fly all over the world. And if you have no wings, give me your car: I want to drive all across the world. And if you have no car, Give me your legs - I want to walk all across the world - For I have none." IT: Recentemente sono stato occupato con l'italiano. Ho notato che il Italiano non
definitivamente usa le stesse costruzione ché lo spagnolo o il francese; per questo ma diverto un poco più in Italiano. Allora devo praticare più con la grammatica i gli esercizi grammaticale che la mia professoressa mi ha mandati. In questo momento sto leggendo un articolo nel Wikipedia sopra il georgiano, con la sua struttura agglutinante. Devo lavorare adesso, però non c'e nessuno nella officia, allora che posso divertirmi senza problemi. EL: Και επίσης διάβασα λίγα ελληνικά - τώρα θα έχω μάθημα στα ελληνικά το βράδυ και πρέπει να μάθω ένα κείμενο για τα Χανιά, μια πόλη στην Κρήτη, που θα μείνω στο φθινόπωρο. EN: I have also perused some Esperanto grammar pages on Wikipedia and wikibooks, predominantly in English and Spanish. However given that my Esperanto is sadly horrible I will not yet write in it here, although when I attend my next polyglot conference I will have a short focus on Esperanto to bring it up to speed for that conference. Given the large amount of polyglots who speak it, it is indispensable. And I am sad I cannot attend this year's gathering in Berlin due to visa restrictions - I have to remain in China, but hopefully that simply means my Chinese will be more or less at basic fluency by the end of my stay. RU: И наконец, я чуть не дочитал украинскую книжку "Игра в отрезанный палец" Куркова, но она все равно написана в русском, ведь автор родом из Санкт-Петербурга (но живет в Киеве в данном моменте). Это вроде какой-то детектив, достаточно легко можно ее читать, даже если словарный запас-то у вас не очень широкий. RU: Спасибо за совет, обязательно попробую потому что немного трудно найти книги когда у вас средний уровень на русском. Я читал где-то в интернете что "Москва 2042" Владимира Войновича тоже нетрудно, но я ещё не попробовал читать эту книгу, я только читаю время от времени маленькие рассказы Чехова с помощью большого словаря и с большим терпением :o) Спасибо за ваш лог, я его читаю с удовольствием и я всегда удивлён с какой скоростью вы учите языки. А, есть и другие книги. Например, недавно читал "Иностранку" Сергея Довлатова, и это
также было довольно легко. Ну если мы о русском, то нет никакой скорости :) Уже давно им занимаюсь. И насчет нескольких других языков, среди этих французский, уже не нужно говорить... но сейчас, после столько труда, все вроде как легче дается мне. Но это только и сейчас, раньше такого не было.
