Assimil does not do an English version of either their European Portuguese or their Brazilian Portuguese. I understand that French versions of Assimil texts are generally better than versions in other languages. Is the Spanish version, El nuevo Portugués sin esfuerzo, better than the French version, Le Nouveau Portugais sans peine? Is it worth a year of learning French?

I think that the Le Portugais du Brésil is only available in French; am I right?

Yes, you are correct. Assimil's Brazilian Portuguese course is with a French base. "El nuevo portugués sin esfuerzo" is for Iberian Portuguese. Unless you have at least an intermediate level of Spanish or French, I don't think these courses will be a very efficient way to learn for you.

You say you're a beginner in Spanish. Best try to reach a higher level before you start Portuguese in the first place. But then even if the audio is for the other variant, you may find at least the book useful, as well as that FSI pdf.
If you have other important reasons to learn French, that's fine. If not, I doubt it's worth proper learning.

You may also use just the audio and transcripts for Assimil Brazilian Portuguese and learn all the necessary information from other sources. I found Assimil Finnish very useful and I have only the audio (and I really don't like the French language).

I agree with Serpent, focus on getting your Spanish to a higher level and then use the Spanish base language for
Portuguese. If you really are set on Brazilian Portuguese and Assimil though you may have to eventually suck it up
and learn French. Although truthfully, French will help you with other languages anyways, the more you know the
easier it gets to learn.

A couple of weeks ago I saw a German base (Brasilianisch ohne Mühe) and Italian base (Il Portoghese brasiliano) for Brazilian Portuguese.

I am guessing a Spanish one will be out eventually, but who truly knows when? The reason for my prediction, is these are the four language bases that offer the majority of selections.

Of course I should get advanced in Spanish before I mess with Portuguese. I was just wondering about options after I finish Assimil's Using Spanish. Learning Portuguese using Spanish ought to be withing reach...
I have a long way to go before that.

I studied Assimil "El nuevo portugues sin esfuerzo". I think it's a good way to learn the
language, especially when you learn also Spanish. Many people think that Spanish and
Portuguese are very similar and that the grammar works the same way. It's not always
true. Learning Portuguese from a book in Spanish helped me a lot to focus on differences
and remembering them.

Hello to all. I am happy to report, that my prediction about one year ago on a Spanish base to learn Brazilian Portuguese is suppose to come out this year. I contacted Assimil Spain about this a month ago January 2013 and the reply was there was no Spanish base to learn Brazilian Portuguese and customer service just directed me to the French base.

I looked over the catalog again recently and contacted Assimil Spain all over, this time the response was different. Customer service stated they will have the book in May of 2013, so I can contact them again at that time to check if they will already have it.
