I am at B1 level in German and want to improve my German over the next couple of
months. I was planning on starting to read books in German and thought it might be fun
if there were other people who were starting out with reading German literature and if
anyone was interested in forming a sort of intermmediate German reading group. We can
discuss the problems we face tackling German literature, suggest books to read and most
importantly remain motivated to read German!

I'm going to read one book, possibly Der Verlorene by Hans-Ulrich Teichel, from this
list over the next three weeks.

Günter Grass, Die Plebejer proben den Aufstand
Heinrich Böll, Die verlorene Ehre der Katharina Blum
Peter Handke, Kaspar
Thomas Bernhard, Heldenplatz
Monika Maron, Pawels Briefe
Hans-Ulrich Treichel, Der Verlorene

EDIT: Reading Der Frauenmörder. Avaible free from amazon.co.uk/.de

That's such a cool idea! Anyone wants to read good old HP together? or Das Parfum?

I´m in!
I think it´s a wonderful idea, especially for us who are more or less the same level and need to build up our vocabulary.
I was going to start with "Momo" by Michael Ende ^^
Regards!

I'm in for reading anything that's free to download on Kindle, since that's what I'm doing already. I find the built-in dictionary, while sometimes difficult (it's DE-DE, not DE-EN) really helps since it's so quick to use.

BTW, anyone know how long until the DE/FR/etc. HP eBooks are available? pottermore recently said "coming very soon" (I just checked and the whole site is down for reworking). I may rather go for French HP, and stick to original German literature myself at this point. As a suggestion though, it might be interesting and instructive to analyze the ways that the translators reinterpret and rework things, like names and incantations and the like.

But how will this work? So far it looks like everyone wants to read a different book.

(My own recommendation is "Der Frauenmörder" by Hugo Bettauer - it is very popular and highly rated on Amazon.de, is not long, and it is in public domain, so one can download it for free from any Amazon or gutenberg.spiegel.de. The literary quality also seems high, despite the light genre.)

I would like to join and also believe that this would work better if more people could agree to read the same books at the same time.

From the previously suggested books, I prefer "Der Frauenmörder", "Momo" and "Der Verlorene", in this order.

Well, after three straight posts about it, I found "Der Frauenmörder" on amazon.com as downloaded the kindle version for free. No promises yet that I'll read it, but it's a start.
