Thanks, Serpent, I forgot the rules were more fully listed at the beginning of the other thread. Manga is mentioned, but it only mentions books over 100 pages. What about BD (which are large format pages)? I've checked, and I have 3 Tintins, all 62 pages each, and a BD called SAM, which has 48 pages. Do I read them each 10 times to count them as a book?

Also, there is no mention of children's books. This can get complicated, but we should have an agreed upon standard.

AFAIU, children's books only count as 1/5 if they have large text and a lot of pictures:)

And I do mostly L2/L3 LR. Usually with Finnish or English though :D The only suitable stuff I have is HP though, the first book in Italian and the second in German. Not sure I'll LR them more than once:)

THE RULES AS STATED AT THE BEGINNING OF THE OTHER THREAD

- Every film counts as long as they have at least voice or subtitles in the TL
- If it lasts less than 45 minutes (a show/series) it counts as half a film. If it lasts for more than three hours it counts as two films.
- If you want to use podcasts or audiobooks, 1 hour and a half is the equivalence of 1 film.
- Every book counts. If it is less than a 100 pages, it counts as half a book. If it is more than 500 pages it counts as two books. 100-499 = 1, 500-749 =2 books, 750-999 = 3, etc.
- You can do fiction or any other material – a documentary on whales, or a book about gardening works just as well as a novel.
- You can see the same films/read the same books again and again
- If you have a book of less than 100 pages, lest’s say 80, you can read 20-30 of the pages again to make it count as a book
- With parallel books you count the pages in your TL – minimum 100 pages to make it count as a book.
- A manga from 100 to 500 pages counts as 1/5 of a book, 500 upwards counts as 2/5 of a book
- You can be at a B1 maximum when the challenge starts
- The material covered for this challenge can be counted and done in parallel with both the 6WC and the Tadoku challenge (so if you participate in all three you could at one point count the same book three times :-)
- If you want to join later than May1st 2012 or end before December 31st 2013, you are welcome.
- If you do L-R it is up to you whether you want to count it as reading (in which case 100-499 pages would count as one book) or if you want to count it as film, in which case 1 hour and a half would count as one film.

-------

I have no answer regarding the BD question for mangas, I have never seen a manga in my life, but perhaps someone else can come up with a sensible proposal?

The original idea was extremely simple. 100 books, 100 films. The general rule of thumb for adaptation of other material, is that you use your best judgement. If you would like a second opinion, please ask, but I man not have the answer:-) However I have seen that others come up with sensible solutions as to how to convert whatever material people read or see.

The main thing is to motivate yourself to read more and see more films (or listen to etc. podcasts). It is not vital whether we count something as a little less or a little more, the essential is just to throw yourself in at the deep end of the pool and watch and read as much as you can. Good luck!

Thank you for clarifying. I understand the need to judge for ourselves with a lot of these things.

For myself, then, I will count my BD books as 1/5 of a book, and my children's books as 1/10. That seems like enough to make them worth as much as reading a 100 page book.

How many news articles on Yahoo News do you think would count as a book? (If no one
answers I'll just do 80 = 1 book)

I don't think I'll be able to afford 100 books from Kyobo but I want to read as diversely
as possible.

Good luck everyone! Two more days!

Somewhere in this thread 100 articles=1 book was established.
Or are they longer than regular articles?

For articles, I think you just have to judge how many book pages the article is similar to. Someone asked a similar question about pages on ms word.

I was glad for this reminder to keep it simple, and just focus on doing it!
